Eugene Skullovitch found himself doing something he never thought he’d do. He was walking on campus on the second week of first semester. He was alone now and needed something to do. And to end his Mothers bitching, he was going to college to at least get some education since he grasped so little in High School. Bulk was out of his life now, having the adventure in space they were supposed to share. So he needed something to fill the day. Maybe now he could focus and move on with his life. Given he’d already been school for only a week and he already realized how much he loved literature and Shakespeare. Something, that with Bulk around, he could have never found himself liking.
As he walked through the crowd, he literally ran into someone he never expected. His heart leapt in his chest. Kimberly Hart. Back in California, on his campus, looking sicker than a dog, though to him she still looked beautiful. Sick, pale, shaky and a bit puffy, but still beautiful, with her dark hair held back away from her face and far too many things in her arms. She was still draped in pink, down her notebook and purse.
“Skull!” she said, voice stuffy but the surprise was clear.
“Heya Kim, fancy meeting you here,” he said, she shuffled the stuff from both arms to one and surprised him by throwing one arm around him. “Are you happy to see me?” he asked, clearly shocked.
“Yeah, actually, I’m just gonna blame it on being sick for now,” she told him with a smile and he laughed, typical Kim.
“I can tell, no offense but you look really sick, should you even be here?” he asked, she was touched by his concern.
“I have to go to class, I have a Professor who is such a hard ass on attendance,” she explained, readjusting the load in her arms.
“Which one?” given the variety of classes he had, he hoped to have at least one in common with her.
“Harris.”
“You’re taking Lit with him too?” He asked, she nodded.
“Yeah, didn’t seem like your cup of tea,” she told him, he shook his head.
“Well, people change. If you want I’ll talk to Harris for you, for some reason he seems to like me. Let me take to home or to your dorm…where are you staying?” he asked, she sighed.
“I have an apartment. The Blue Haven complex,”
As he helped her over to her small apartment and as soon as she was in the door, she was racing to the bathroom. Her books thrown on the floor, papers flying, he mentally noted that if nothing was accomplished out of this, he would get her folders. He collected her books and papers and placed them on her coffee table; he headed down the small hall and knocked on the door.
“Kim? You alright?”
With a groan the door swung open and she stumbled into his arms. She was damn near boneless.
“No. I think I’m gonna die,” he couldn’t help but laugh, effortlessly lifted her and she let out a squeak in surprise.
“You’ll be fine,” he assured her, “I’ve been sick plenty of times and I’ve taken care of Bulkie more than once.”
“I never said you could take care of me,” Kim pointed out, as he laid her down on her bed and covered her up.
“I know, but I’m going to,” he said, she sighed.
“I’m too tired to fight,” she told him and let her eyes close, he headed back to the living room, grabbed a book from his bag.
For hours he sat on his bed, reading while she slept, she would wake up, shift and continue sleeping. It was later that day when she woke up and seemed to be functional again.
“Hey,” her voice was quiet and sleepy.
“Hey, sleep help?” she nodded and sat up a little, squinting at him, “It seems so weird you’re here.”
“I’m not surprised,” he told her, “But it’s the one place I always wanted to be,”
It was time to be honest to her. To be the man he wanted to become and to his surprise, she hugged him.
“We’ll see,” she told him and he stroked her hair, “Thank you, for staying…and I hope I don’t get you sick,” to his surprise, she pulled him down and spooned to his side.
“The course of true love never did run smooth,” he quoted and she smiled, resting her head on his shoulder.
