As I was driving home tonight from a shitty night of bowling, I noticed extremely bright lights nearly blinding me as I approached the house. Jeff arrived home minutes after I did, and Brian came over, so we walked towards the lights to see what was going on. There was this big crane with huge lights on it, illuminating nearby buildings. We talk to the guys and come to find out they're shooting
The Wire about 5 blocks from our house. Brian was an A/V geek after college so he talked to the guys about production for a while, then we continued towards the main area.
Right in front of
the library, they were shooting a scene (I guess the dialogue was taking place in the back seat of the car) so that you could see straight down O'Donnell St. We walked to the the southeast corner of Ellwood and O'Donnell to watch for a while, but they told us to move since we were standing directly in the background of the shot. We had to be asked to move further down the road a couple times since they changed camera angles. They had some staged cars drive through during the shoots, but of course they had to deal with regular traffic. This one dude got all pissed off and started honking his horn before he realized he was sitting behind the prop cars and went around them. After watching for a while we walked to the other side (northwest corner) and watched them shoot the final scene a few times with the cop car driving off with its lights on. We got a pretty good idea of how tedious and repetitive it is to shoot a TV show.
All three of us were pretty hungry by this point, and we kept talking about how we should just run up to the food table for the crew and grab some food and bolt, but they had already started packing up all their stuff, so we ate at Nacho Mama's. After eating, we were pretty tired, it was cold outside, and like 1:00, so Jeff and I took a cab home, which Brian refused. It was only $3.
