I got out to the mountain at a reasonable time (1p), and decided not to wear the face-covering stuff because it was about 40 degrees out (ridiculously warm when you're thinking in skiing terms).
When it's warm like this I"m reminded how much work I actually am doing out there when I get sweaty. I'm also going a lot faster on runs than I used to, so I'm getting in a lot more runs in the same stretch of time.
Since it was overcast and warm (or maybe because it was Tuesday), there were few people out there. We're talking the only limit to how long I had to wait before getting on the lift was how fast I could scoot through the lift line area to get to the lift again. The runs were beautifully open, and there wasn't a huge amount of snow buildup on the runs. There were a few spots on some of the black diamond runs that had exposed ice, but it was overall awesome.
I think it's a good thing I got my tune now - I had a few moments where I think my edges caught on the snow, because there were times where i had to recover from a big wobble out of nowhere. I've read this happens when your edges get nasty and jagged. That's okay, because I'd already planned on getting my skis tuned after today's fun, and so I did. The guys at the shop (one who actually does the tuning) said I should get a belt tune because he wasn't sure if my little boards were long enough for the stone grind machine. He's got a point - the thing's got a significant amount of space between the two sides of it - I could see where it would be a hassle with really small boards. He said he could run them by hand on the other machine and he'd make sure they got a good resurfacing and coats of wax as well as the edges. They'll be ready on Thursday, and since tomorrow's therapist/Cantab day (plus I have to stop by and drop off something in Carlisle on my way into Cambridge) that works perfectly - as planned.
Should have remembered the sunscreen - my nose is just the slightest bit red. *oops*
In all, I was out there about 2 hours total. Skied all the major runs at least a couple of times. Got going pretty fast and had to recover from wobble a couple of times. I made a point of actually looking out at the view when going down every run. I'm usually paying attention to the trail and forget to notice how pretty it is.
Talked to a lady on the lift who'd driven up from Plymouth to go skiing. It reminded me how much I really enjoy being here to go skiing so easily. Sometimes it gets frustrating living so far from "civilization," but I really love the winters. I'm looking forward to getting new boards next winter *and* buying my season pass really early so it's uber-cheap (I got mine in the middle of October, it's a lot cheaper in June or July). This year has shown me how much fun I can have while doing something good for myself. I think I've been the most active I've been in ages and I like that. It probably helps mitigate the depression, too. All that together is well worth what I've paid for it.
Looking forward to kicking back for a while, now.
