I've always felt a connection with NYC - a lot of that is probably just US pop culture that I lapped up as a kid - and still do. Why else would I take up American Studies at uni? On Sept. 11 2001, I was a student studying for that degree taking my year abroad at The University at Albany, NY. I thought of that day yesterday. Not the politics, just the sadness of the event, and even more so the bravery I witnessed of people not only wanting to help in any way possible - whether it was a student in my class who took national guard duties to help with the aftermath, but also the bravery of people just coping gracefully. I feel a connection to the city that I think will always be there having gone through the shock myself. I was one of the lucky ones - I may not have lost anything that day, but I sure as a heck gained a new respect for NY and the people who live there. Wow is right:
