I've made big decisions regarding the next year and enrolling in school was the first major step in accomplishing the goals I have set for the next year. I will garduate in exactly 2 years with a dual Music Business/Audio Production degrees. What used to be only certificate classes are now full degrees so I am happy about that.
I've begun working on a business plan for a Record Store of my own to be opened in Downtown Phoenix . Granted it won't just be a Record store, cause you can't survive off of just wax anymore, but a full urban lifestyle store if you will catering to the 4 elements of Hip Hop - DJing, Grafitti, MC's, and Bboys.
Aside from being able to buy records and ALL of the DJ related gear you will be able to purchase both mens and womens clothing/accesories, buy Graf supplies, take DJ lessons, buy DVDS, Magazines, & books geared towards DJs, Bboys, MC's, and Graf artists. I will also be purchasing a sound system to rent out for whatever occasion (since I'll have a degree in live sound I can run it myself!) and will be running my Mobile DJ Service out of the shop among many, many other things. Anyone been to Turntable lab in either NY or CA? Well, think that only on a slightly bigger scale.
I only need about $35,000 to get started MUCH less than I had originally thought but after all of my research I was pleasantly suprise. I have begun my business plan with the hopes of getting a business loan in the next 6 months and I have also been applying for grants available to women entreprenuers.
Expect me to disapear a bit over the next 10 months or so. I won't be accepting anymore rave bookings and will actually be bringing Shimmy to a close at the end of May. While everything is going well I don't have the time for 2 weeklies, a Cali monthly residency, school full time, and all the other shit going on.
It's all very much doable but I just gotta really buckle down over the next 10-12 months. That's not long at all.
