I opened my e-mail this morning to find a note from my Glowing Dial co-host Steve asking when we're going to record new shows. At the bottom of that note was mention that John Inman had passed away at age 71. For those who do not recognize the name, John Inman was a British actor who played the character of Mr. Humphries on "Are You Being Served?", the British double-entendre sitcom from the 70's and 80's. It's still run regularly on channel 56 here in Detroit.
I am always a bit saddened when I hear of someone passing, especially so when it was someone I admired and whose work I enjoyed. I remember when Steve and I met John Inman in person some years ago. Steve and I had both volunteered to sit on the phone banks at channel 56 when they did their pledge drives. Somehow through doing that, Steve got an invitation to a high tea on a Sunday afternoon where you had the chance to meet Mr. Inman. Steve, like a true buddy, asked me along. It was very nice. Mr. Inman came out, had tea with us, talked about his career and fielded questions from all of us. Wonderful memory of a charming and witty man. Rest in peace John, you will be missed.
If any of you know the series "Keeping Up Appearances", you know the one with "The Bucket Woman" who always has to be the center of the social happenings of her neighbourhood? Well, the lady who played The Bucket Lady's neighbour Elizabeth (the one who kept spilling coffee), was an actress named Josephine Tewson and she is John Inman's cousin. Just a little trivia for y'all.
All the best, Brick

are you being served,
