Today, I started reading
The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ by Philip Pullman (he of "His Dark Materials" fame). It's a remarkable retelling of the New Testament account of the life of Jesus and one of his (possible) brothers. Delightfully subversive, especially if you are very familiar with the biblical account. For me, it's a real page turner. For others, it might be boring or irrelevant, especially if they have (at best) no interest or (at worst) disdain for the story of how one man's simple ethic got turned into the biggest organized religion in the world.
Christianity has always played a part in my life. Sometimes positively (family, friends) and sometimes negatively (instilling shame and fear). I can't see myself ever giving in to it, embracing it, but it will always be with me in some way. It is indirectly a part of who I am, and I can't see a time when I will stop examining it, turning it over, reading about it, especially from the point of view of those on the outside.
