A riotous affair

I didn't bother posting about the riots because there didn't seem to be much point. It was pretty much regarded all round as a "bad thing", and there seemed to be more than enough analysis as to why it was happening. I didn't think that there were any simple answers and I came to the conclusion that it was more likely that for any justification given as to why the riots were happening there would have been at least one person it applied to. So, I just accepted that everyone was probably right and, all in all, it was a bit of a pointless exercise in generating a myriad of correct answers. It was good to read everyone's points of view but at the same time a little bit nauseating that everyone seemed to think that they, and they alone, had the answer to why the end of civilization was just round the next corner.

More interestingly though, over the past two days or so I've been considering the controversial decision by a lot of councils on the eviction of rioters, especially during Question Time last night. The idea of making the rioters homeless seems like a pointless exercise - making people homeless helps no-one. But then not evicting them seems almost as ridiculous - why should the communities they violated be expected to support them? That makes no sense either. So purely from an objective viewpoint I was willing to go with the idea that evicting them was wrong.

However I then started considering the subjective viewpoint, in that the rioters either didn't consider the consequences of their actions, or just didn't care. As such I am ultimately loathe to defend a group who had no interest in the followup, and hence I'm more inclined to go with the idea that we should have evictions all round for the rioters. Not as some sort of punishment, but simply because that's what they've opted into.

My brain really went into overdrive trying to reconcile this one. Feel free to point out that I'm a right wing pig that came to the wrong decision!
