The Numb3rs Muse has been hard at work, so today you get six (count 'em, SIX) Numb3rs stories!
It's been a bit of a busy summer for me. I started out the summer unemployed, and I've ended the summer on a three month contract job back at my old company. Which has severely cramped my writing. Still, when the Muse calls, I answer.
Earlier this year, I completely ran out of Drabble Juice. I'm not kidding; I stopped writing drabbles. After somewhere north of forty, I guess the Muse wanted a break. So, I haven't written drabbles regularly in an age.
That all changed this summer. The Muse and I came to some sort of agreement: she'll let me write the occasional drabble if I'll let her write whatever she wants. It's not really much of a bargain, because I already let her write whatever she wants. Still, I let go of the drabbles and was able to keep writing (Lord bless the little rat-catcher).
I posted a pair of drabbles for swingandswirl's and mustangcandi's birthdays. You Can Leave Your Hat On is a David/Liz drabble (my first in that pairing!) that was inspired by this (add link here) photo of Alimi Ballard. Nrgh, that man is sexy in a hat! Who knew? (Don't answer that). I wrote it for mustangcandi, because she loves her some David/Liz, and she went squee over it (my ears are still ringing). And yes, that song was playing in my head on repeat as I wrote it.
The other drabble gift was for swingandswirl, called How the Heavens Go, is Amita-centric, but not the Amita we saw on the show. This Amita, my Amita, is strong and accomplished, and Charlie is proud of that fact. It was fun to play a little with that, because I'm not a big fan of the way Amita was written-nor was I a big fan of the Charlie/Amita relationship-but at least fanfiction gives me the chance to write that strong female character that I love so much. The title comes from a quote by Galileo: "The bible tells us how to go to heaven, not how the heavens go."
I went to see Il Divo with my mother back in July, and oh my goodness I could barely stand all the pretty! And, of course, that inspired another drabble. And Evening Engagement features Don/Liz, because out of all the relationships Don's ever had, I think Liz matched him best. She was strong and independent, and she carried a gun. So, I had to give them the ending the writers refused to give us (me). It's fluffy and entirely too saccharine, but I don't care.
Then, a couple of weeks ago, the Muse blessed me with not one, not two, but a whole handful of drabbles! I decided to write the August Rewind prompts, which yielded The Wee Small Hours. It's a character study of David, because I haven't written nearly enough of him and I wanted to take a stab at a real, in depth piece on him. So, it's 800 words-4x200-of angsty, introspective insomnia. The inspiration came because I don't think Don's the only one who worries over the decisions he's had to make. The things they have to do on a daily basis have to haunt them, and maybe David's just better at covering that up. The title for this story comes from that old Sinatra song, "In the Wee, Small Hours of the Morning", though that song talks about lying awake at night thinking about your lover. That's not so much what David's doing, yet I still felt the title was appropriate.
The other drabble I wrote was for the August prompt, tie. I was aiming for a sexy, fluffy bit of fun with a man's necktie. What I got was a drunk Don, lamenting the end of his engagement to Robin. Huh? /shakes head/ I will never understand the Muse. At any rate, this was 300 words of Liz coming to Don's rescue when he's too drunk to drive. I called it Tie One On, because that's what Don did, but also because-as we've well established by now-Muse won't let me write a drabble unless I use the prompt word in the title as well.
But wait, there's more! I also signed up for the Numb3rs_Het Summer Challenge, and was able to finish that one in record time. My prompts were: Washington DC, Take-out, Crush and Find. Finders, Keepers is Charlie/Liz, and takes place around two years after the end of the show. I tried to be kind in the way I ended Charlie's marriage to Amita (and I've gotten comments to that effect on AO3, so I guess I managed okay). The story takes place at Quantico and the DC area, and is told from both Charlie's and Liz's perspective. It was fun to write, but more important, this was my first true challenge fic. I've never signed up for one before (though I did give serious consideration to signing up for the Big Bang this year), so I thought this might be a good place to get my feet wet, as it were, to see if I could even write under that kind of pressure (and yes, I know, this challenge wasn't really the pressure variety). I'm happy to report that the Muse cooperated quite well. Maybe I'll dive in and do a Big Bang next year after all.
So, that about sums up my late-summer Numb3rs postings. Links to the stories at AO3 are below. I hope you enjoy them!
