For as long as we have been, Mother Sun has watched over us. Her touch warms us with her love, brings us our crops, and keeps the deadly cold at bay. Some seasons she relaxes and gives the world a cooling rest and others she blazes to remind us of her might, but every morning she is there to greet us and guide us through our lives.
And for just as long, her lover Moon has joined her above us, calmly providing a guiding hand and keeping watch at night. He longs to be with her but his path is set in the Heavens around us, and can no more reach her than we can. They dance an eternal dance, never truly far apart but never able to be together.
Mother Sun shares her love with us all, children and lover alike. But while she greets us every morning, Moon's path sometimes hides her from him for days. While she is in view he glows with her attention and shares it with us at night. When she is gone, he sulks cold and inert and we hide with him from the things in the darkness. Always he yearns for more, to be warm with her again.
One day, his desire could not be restrained. He reached forth in the sky to her and took in all her love and attention and warmth, swallowing it until there was none left for us and the world grew dark and cold. We cowered and watched from below as he crafted the last of it into a ring of pure light so large it surrounded him, crowned with a glowing gem so bright it hurt to look upon. He offered it up to her and asked her to stay with him forever.
Mother Sun was wise, and knew that no matter how much they loved each other, her children needed her gaze much more. She made him a deal, if he gave her children a gift she would think about it, and later she would give him her answer. After some thought Moon reached down and pulled on the oceans, stirring them and bringing them with him as he moved through the Heavens again. They sighed and whispered and played upon the shores, and Sun's children were delighted with the sounds and the beauty of the waters new complexity sparkling in her light.
Every so often, Moon tries again, and Mother Sun gently tasks him with keeping up his gift while she considers his offer and he continues on. We bask in her light and love, and the splendor and grace Moon gifts us via the tides and the waves, and life is good.
