[LJ Idol, 10-1] I Need the Struggle to Feel Alive
Hello. We haven’t met yet, but when we do you’re going to fall deeply, irrevocably in love with me. You will show me off to your friends, take me home to your parents, share me with your loved ones. They will tell you, “This is the one,” and maybe they’ll see some of you in me. You will plan our future together, a future where I have all that you wished for in life. Where I need never feel the pain, the suffering, the senseless loss and setback this uncaring and heartless world throws at us.
I am the protagonist of your next story. And truly, I understand your desire to shine a bright light in a darkening world. The need to create something beautiful and to nurture and shelter it so you can vicariously experience wonder and joy, success and fulfillment. “The world has enough suffering,” you say, why bring more of it into our lives? But, I have to ask this of you.
Hurt me. Give it to me good, and hard, and often. I need this! I cannot live a life in only two dimensions. Nothing could be crueler than to craft a creature in cardboard. Without experiences, without strife, I will never be alive.
Stand me up, then knock me down. Soon, I shall learn to stand on my own. Offer me joys, then snatch them away. Through dedication and sweat I shall earn them, and they will be sweeter for it. Take from me what I love, have me shed tears. What I still have and will gain will be more precious, for I’ll know they may not always be there. Make me bleed. Make me claw and fight and crawl for every inch I gain towards my goals. I will be filled with the fiery drive to overcome my obstacles, to grow and improve and adapt until I stand on the pinnacle of success and revel in the glories of my achievements.
All of this will forge me into what I can truly be. This is what it means to be real, to have dimension, to be interesting. So I beg of you, don’t hold back. Put me through all the trials and tribulations that life throws at us, and let me feel alive.
