Daniel arrived wrapped in his best sheet-and-blanket approximation of the* robes he'd worn on Abydos. Better than that, though, was the food he'd managed to procure. The Doctor had happily provided him with a quail he 'just happened to have sitting in the back of the fridge', some figs, and some barley Daniel'd found in the back of the Time Lord's pantry. Best of all, he'd had some clay pots that, while they probably weren't really intended for cooking, would fit the bill none the less.

He set up early, and made a small fire pit off to one side, sort-of near the food tables, into which he had set two large clay pots, one with a lid on it, the other filled with a bubling stew that smelled of cumin, coriander, onion and garlic. He sat on a rock, stirring it occasionally with a wooden spoon, and people watching.

*please ignore the black-robed guy. SG-1 stole the idea from Star Wars

"That smells fantastic," Cayce said, wandering up with a still-very-full cup of Barbossa's rum in her hand. She sized up the robes. Sort of Bedouin-looking. "So is your adoptive culture a desert culture?"

((Does he shoot lightning from his fingertips too? ^_^))

Daniel grinned at her.

"Yeah. First planet we went to through the 'Gate. They call it Abydos, and the people there are decedents of Ancient Upper Egyptins; presumably the city of Abydos, since they've kept the name. I met my wife there."

((Actually, not that I remember. But Danny does. ~giggles~))

"So maybe there's something to all that Ancient Astronaut stuff after all, huh?" Cayce joked. Then: "I, uh, didn't know you were married." How had she missed that, after all this time?

"Oh, you have no idea," he answered, giving the pot a stir. "Yeah. She um, she was a gift, actually. When we came through the Stargate they thought we were gods. I didn't even understand what was going on at the time; I knew how to read their dialect, but of course I'd never heard it spoken, so it took me a while to figure it out. You can imagine my shock and horror when I realized." He had to laugh, now, looking back on it and how naive he'd been.

Cayce whistled low. "Wow. That's old school explorer stuff there; like the first white folks to land on some Pacific island or whatever. I can see how that'd all be kind of a shock. To everyone involved."

"But it worked out, in the end," Daniel concluded. "Took her about two days to get me to fall head over heels in love with her. She's smart, and funny, and just so... full of life, you know? She taught me a lot in just that first year. And she's beautiful," he added with a blushing grin.

Aww. Cayce couldn't help grinning too. The small pang of missing Peter that accompanied it was only to be expected, of course. "What's her name?"

"Sha're," he answered, wistfully, but the sad expression on his face soon melted away and he added cheefully; "She taught me how to make this dish. Of course, most of the proper ingredients aren't available, obviously, but I'm making a fair approximation based on the sorts of things they'd have been cooking with back in Egypt."

"Well, I'm sure it'll be great, if the smell's anything to go by," Cayce said. "I guess the Doctor came through with his larder, huh?"

"Here's hoping. I'm more worried about the bread than the stew, though." He tapped the other closed pot. "I was never very good with baking. And yeah, he did. The pots are his too. I know he gave Aeryn some things too, I don't know if he did for anyone else, but he did say he'd come and bring stuff. I don't know what kind of stuff, though, he just said stuff."

The Doctor had been kind of funny about the whole 'share your culture' thing; at first he'd gotten really excited about it and bounced around talking rapidly the way that seemed to be pretty much his mo, and then he'd suddenly gone quiet and almost moody. He'd seemed pretty willing to help out, though, so Daniel figured he'd probably show up eventually.

"Well, if anything comes out funny, you can always say 'that's how we do it at home' and no one will be the wiser," Cayce said, smiling. "I'm glad he was willing to help, anyway. Wonder what he'll show up with." Crowley wouldn't be too cheery about the Doctor showing up, but ... oh well, it was an open invitation, and everyone could just deal. (Cayce had reached that point that all party organizers achieve at some point in the evening, where one decides that as long as no brawls are breaking out and no one is vomiting in the punchbowl, it's all good.)

"Oh, by the way," she added, holding up her glass, "you and John have competition in the homebrew business. This here is genuine pirate rum, distilled by a real pirate." Well, real enough, anyway.

"It's how I used to do it at home, anyway," Daniel agreed, amused. "Sha're used to laugh and laugh. It's very humbling to go from a god to the guy who can't even grind his own flour, let me tell you."

"That's great. I'll definitely have to try some. Makes me wish Skara was here; my brother in law. Taught him how to make it- he got to be quite the pro. I bet he'd love to see how someone else does it."

"Well, hang on." Cayce grabbed an empty glass from a nearby table and tipped half of her rum into it. She handed the glass to Daniel. "No way in hell was I going to finish this on my own anyway."

"Hey John. Hey Aeryn. Oh man, those look good," Cayce said. "There's a bit of buffet table that hasn't been taken up by anything yet."
