She-Hulk, Moving In (backdated to day of her arrival)

Feb 05, 2008 11:00

It wasn't all that long until Jen spotted exactly where she was going to bunk up. It was big. It was in a tree. It was... it was perfect. Sure, she'd feel like she needed to update all her outfits to silly animal prints and fur, but she could probably pull that off ( Read more... )

Cayce, out foraging and casually checking in on people, was passing through Adventureland when she-well, you couldn't help noticing Jen.

"Hey there," she called out. "You're new here, huh?"

"I guess I kinda stick out, huh?" Jen said, smiling broadly. She moved a strand of hair from her face, tucking it behind an ear. "I'm She-Hulk. But friends call me Shulkie."

((Y HALO THAR, failure of LJ to send notifications. :P))

"Nice to meet you, She-Hulk," Cayce said. Dint of living here for however long meant that she got it out with a perfectly straight face. She held out her hand. "Found a place to get settled in yet?"

Jen pointed up at the treehouse. "That's what I got my eye on. Haven't quite checked it for occupancy, yet."

Cayce frowned, trying to remember. "I think it's empty now? A guy named Sallah used to live there, but he's ..." She trailed off, not knowing if Jen had been briefed on the tendency people had to just vanish. "He's not here anymore," she finished lamely.

"I thought there wasn't a proper way out?" Jen said, raising an eyebrow.

Crap. "There's not," Cayce said, a little reluctantly. "I guess no one's told you about the disappearing thing?"

"No, no one's mentioned that," Jen said with a little sigh. "Guess it couldn't be all fun and amusement-parky, huh?"

"Yeah, something like that," Cayce agreed. "What it is, is that sometimes people just ... aren't there anymore. You don't see them for a while, and then you go check out their place and there's nothing there. There was one incident where someone vanished while two of his friends were sleeping in the same room with him, but then he came back later, and-" Oh, man, how did you explain Katou? "Well. Long story. Anyway, there's no rhyme or reason to the vanishing thing, not as far as we can tell. And Leon Orcot thinks they're being turned into ducks."

"Like, duck ducks, or the anthropomorphic kind?" Jen asked. She had to, what with knowing Howard.

"Duck ducks. You'll see that the only animals around here-aside from some people's pets-are the ducks that live in the moat and the lake. Leon claims there's more of them than when he first arrived, but hell if I know. It's not like we're able to band them and count them or anything like that."

"Well I guess if you end up seeing a green duck around some day, that might help prove the theory," Jen said, a little hesitantly. "Though I pretty much hope that doesn't happen."

"Yeah, I hope so too," Cayce agreed with some feeling. "It gets a little ... wearing, you know?" She sighed. "Anyway. Back to your original question, I think the treehouse is free. I try to keep track of everyone in the park and where they live, and I can't remember anyone mentioning the treehouse, not lately. Sallah had a tent-thing at the base, but obviously the treehouse itself is available too."

"Keep track of everyone?" Jen said, a little impressed. "That desperate for things to keep you occupied, or are you just our friendly neighborhood obsessive-compulsive?"

Cayce laughed. "A little of both, maybe? I've been here for a long damn time, and working the information angle on the place keeps me busy. And I've got just enough corporate anal-retentiveness that I actually went through with it instead of just thinking 'gosh, someone oughtta...'." Which reminded her. She took a folded pamphlet out of her back pocket, hesitated a moment (not sure if a green superhero would need this information), and then handed over a neatly printed document containing information of interest to human women in their childbearing years. (She tended to carry a couple in her pocket at all times, just in case she happened by a new arrival.)

"Just so's you know," she said. "I used to have a chat on this subject with all the human female arrivals who qualified, but finally decided this would be easier, faster, and less awkward for everyone."

Jen glanced over the document. Her eyes widened just a bit.

"...I can imagine it was very awkward," she conceded.
