"It's not so much ducks, per se," Aziraphale was saying, smiling ruefully. "I quite like them, you know? I could imagine a more terrible fate. It's more not knowing the purpose, and that I seem to have been singled out to return, and I can't fathom why." Tranquil acceptance was easy to ( Read more... )

Sam didn’t recognize either of the men, but there was something that prickled along his spine, just for a moment, as he looked at them. Then it was gone and he fell into step beside his brother, strides purposefully casual.

They jostled back and forth a bit, playfully, and Sam made some off-hand comment about being hungry. They were walking a little faster than the two men, and after a few moments they passed them. Sam glanced sidelong at them, as discreetly as he could manage, and very nearly did a double take.

“Uh, excuse me?” he said to the dark haired man. “Are you the guy who ended up stuck as Jack Sparrow on that day everyone had to talk like pirates?”

Aziraphale blinked and looked at Crowley with an inquisitively raised eyebrow. He vaguely recalled meeting a pirate gent that who day bore Crowley a noticeable resemblance (while studiously trying not to recall his own embarrassing getup) but dismissing it as a coincidence at the time.

Crowley glowered slightly at the man - his memory provided the name Will along with a number of humiliating connotations to go with it - who'd come up alongside them. He didn't particularly like to dwell on those days when he seemingly had no control over his actions, appearance, or affections. For a demon whose control over himself was his shield against the world, it was fairly devastating to lose it on a regular but unpredictable basis.

"What if I am?" he asked curtly, his expression as blank as the lenses in his sunglasses.

Dean cast a sidelong glance at his brother as he tried not to grin at that mental image.

Back to the task at hand, though. Dean wanted to turn the EMF meter on again to see if its reading had gotten stronger, but it would be hard to manage that without drawing too much attention to the device. The holy water would also be effective, but he couldn't quite justify splashing the two men with water yet. That left the name-of-God test, which he'd never been able to pull off very discreetly, at least not without preamble.

Hoping Sam had a plan, he settled for glancing back and forth between the two men intently as his right hand closed around the water bottle he'd shoved into his pocket.

"Really, my dear, surely a little courtesy wouldn't kill you?" Aziraphale chided gently, and leaned slightly forward to smile past Crowley at the young man who had spoken, wondering why he seemed so twitchy. "Do forgive my friend, he's not always so rude. Only most of the time. My name is Ezra Fell, and this is Anthony Crowley." He paused a beat, glancing from the older boy to the younger and back. "Is everything quite all right?"

“No problem,” Sam said, smiling. “I’m Sam, and this is my brother Dean,” he nodded his head at his brother, then shrugged at the question. “Yeah, everything’s fine. I was just confused; thought I recognized you, Mr. Crowley, but I wasn’t sure. Hard to tell without the dreadlocks and the beard.” A grin. “Do you guys live around here?”

Crowley rolled his eyes. The weird way these guys were acting, a little courtesy could kill them. Or at least attempt to. He could have sworn the older one was fingering something barrel-shaped in his pocket.

He didn't smile back. "Yeah, well it's hard to pull off the dreadlock and eyeliner look every day. I think I'll stick with my Armani." Careful not to glance at the discrete entrance to Club 33 which was just in front of them, he added, "I live not too far away. Mr. Fell is my guest for the moment." He wasn't likely to get any more specific than that.

Dean turned to Sam and nodded. "We've met before," he said, indicating Crowley. "When I showed up here." He'd just been glad to see another person, at that point, but now... Well, something was definitely off here.

Watching the two men closely (particularly the Ezra guy, who was definitely creeping him out a little), Dean asked, "Have either of you seen anything out of the ordinary around here? More out of the ordinary than usual, I mean. We thought we might have heard something outside." If it turned out that neither of them was responsible for setting the EMF off, there was always the off chance they might have seen whoever was.

Glancing at Crowley with a flicker of merriment in his eyes, Aziraphale nevertheless said with a more or less straight face, "Well, a young girl went by earlier chasing a monkey, who was chasing an ambulatory banana. And there were rather a lot of ghosts about the Haunted Mansion, but I suspect that's quite normal. Other than that...I don't know, Crowley, you're more familiar with the area than I."

With a lip twitch, Crowley added. "Yeah. Moving banana. Definitely the weirdest thing today. Although the kid with the horizontal pigtails is right up there." This from the man who wears sunglasses on the Haunted Mansion...

"Moving banana?" Sam questioned, perplexed. "Like, moving on it's own?"

((reposted for html screwiness))

The thought, possessed banana?, crossed Dean's mind for the briefest of moments, but he quickly recovered, turning his attention instead to the pigtailed girl. She must have been passing by the store around the same time as the men...

With a glance at Sam, Dean cleared his throat. "Ambulatory banana, huh? Maybe that's the--uh, weird thing we heard. I'm gonna go check it out." He maneuvered around the group and headed toward the girl.

Dean's guess was closer than he realized, though 'divinely inspired banana' might be nearer the mark.

"So you gentlemen are investigators?" he inquirely politely of Sam as Dean wandered off, wondering if he should direct them to Leon and his people. Though really, if they were so easily spooked by strange noises and diverted by tales of animate fruit (even true ones,) Leon might not appreciate the help.

It didn't occur to him to be worried on his own account or Crowley's. Even if the young men should somehow suss out the truth about them*, the worst they could do with the information was tell others, which would be inconvenient but (given the circumstances) not really a catastrophe.

---

*And escape without having their memories altered, which, having suffered a bout of amnesia recently himself, Aziraphale hoped would not be necessary.

Sam shrugged.

"There's not much else to do around here," he said. "And I guess like everyone else we keep looking for some explanation of what's going on, for whatever good it does. And I guess living in alternate version Disneyland has got us a little jumpy." Or a lot.

He was starting to feel a bit ridiculous about the whole thing; for all they knew it was some aspect of the park messing with the EMF meter, and these guys didn't really seem supernatural or threatening in any way.

"Yeah, alternate Disneyland, creepy, bored, stuck here, blah, blah, blah, etc. We've heard it. So, if you're quite done with the 'getting to know you' bullshit," Crowley hinted impatiently. As he turned to face Aziraphale, someone observing closely might have seen a flash of sickly yellow from the edge of his sunglasses.

Aziraphale sighed with mild exasperation, so accustomed to the occasional glimpse of Crowley's strange eyes that it (unfortunately) didn't even register. Sam and Dean seemed nice boys, if a trifle odd, and he would have enjoyed talking with them a bit more. "Oh, quite. We do after all have so many other pressing engagements..."
