Wee, just when you think LJ won't make it easier for you to stalk someone, they introduce a new feature.
Livejournal's New Notification System is currently paid and perminant accounts only, but they're planning on releasing it to basic and plus accounts with limiting factors like how many and what sort of subscriptions these accounts can subscribe. Anyways, it's kinda useful, but it's pretty clear how easily it can turn creepy. I looked at the settings just now, turned on the "let me know by email when someone friends me" option, and the two community options (when someone invites me, or if someone wants to join one of mine), but the part that looks creepifying is the fact that one can subscribe to a user, get notified of new entries, new user pics, or entries with specific tags. I am unsure if the person being subscribed to is notified of such, but if they aren't, stalkers will flock to this feature and it is creepifying.
I do find certain aspects of it useful, and if used responcibly, it can be a great way to keep up with friends who are very verbose in their LJs, and are good about tagging their entries, making it easy for you to catch the entries that you find important, but ignore their two am cheesecake declarations of awesome or whatever. There will probably have to be safe guards put in eventually as LJ abuse starts hearing complaints about it.
