i'd like to add that gates could have been prosecuted for iran contra, but was not due to the uncertainty of a conviction.

I knew about the u.s. supporting the mujahideen, but I had no idea it was done so early with hopes of baiting Russia at the obvious cost of destroying Afghanistan. I feel kind of sick. Thanks for pointing this out.
