In-house has its stressors, and corporate America has politics too, but overall I think in-house work allows a better work-life balance than firm life. Unless you're General Counsel of a big honkin' company you are probably not going to make the kind of salary you'd make as an equity partner, but it's more stable work, I think. I earn a good living (even without the crazy money of a law firm partnership). No having to sell sell sell to build a book of business, which I like. I've done BigLaw, and I wouldn't want to do it again. If I ever went outside, it'd have to be boutique work. I'm very happy where I am, despite occasional frustration with practicing law in a place where law isn't the central function (leading to the realizaton that sometimes they think of the legal department's opinion AFTER they've already done something, and sometimes you give an opinion and they ignore you). I am valued and I am part of the company's success. If you want to talk about it in more detail, email me at lawgeekgurl@yahoo.com. and I'll answer any questions for you.
