Cupid's Home, Monday morning Fandom Time

Jul 27, 2009 11:06

It wasn't quite Olympus, but Cupid had managed to find a quiet mountaintop to build his home in the mortal realm. Leaning over the porch rail in the morning sun, a cup of nectar in her hand, Aphrodite sighed. It was a very peaceful place. So like her son to find something that reminded him of home, while still being placed firmly among mortals. Though she couldn't see it, she knew there was a whole village of them just over the next ridge.

She'd casually asked her son how many of them had special powers. He'd looked at her with a raised eyebrow.

"None. Mortals don't have powers. What's wrong with you, Mom?"

It was Fandom, of course. Which had started the talk of exactly what the island really was like. Cupid had been surprised. "I mean, I knew, yadda yadda, middle of time and space, yadda yadda, but -- that's just talk." He tilted his head. "Daughter of Atropos? Really?"

Remembering his outrage at how easily her cover had been blown, she smiled. It was a good thing they'd been outside, or his wings would have wrecked the kitchen and Psyche would have been angry.

"I told you to stay out of trouble!"

"It wasn't my fault! Those rotten squirrels are everywhere!"

Yeah, that had gone over well.

But they'd talked it out, and after several minor disagreements that had ended in mismatched animal love affairs on the mountain, they'd come to an agreement.

"Look, Unc is off in South America still, trying to start some continental revolt or something, but he's having a hard time. Something about the old Inca gods? I don't know. But he's distracted, so I doubt he's heard anything about where you are. If you sit tight, you should be fine."

"That was my plan anyway."

"Well, good. But no love spells, okay? Sounds like there's enough going on there without you adding to the mix."

"Scout's honor."

"You weren't a scout."

"Picky, picky." She was glad he hadn't noticed the crossed fingers behind her back.

From there it had been a great weekend, with time spent with Cupid's family and their son, Bliss, who was now courting a retired demi-goddess from Scandinavia. Psyche had mentioned possible wedding bells in the couple's future, and 'Dite wondered when her son had gotten old enough to have a grown son, and how old she had gotten.

For some reason, it made her long for Fandom and the randomness of the place.

Which found her standing on the porch, enjoying the quiet of the morning on this mountain refuge.

"Thought I'd find you here." Cupid came out onto the deck, a mug of coffee in his hand.

Aphrodite sniffed at it, then grimaced. "How can you drink that?"

"I like it." He shrugged and joined her at the railing, leaning on his elbows. "It was one of the first things I actually tasted when I left Olympus."

"And you liked it? Ick."

He smiled. They both went quiet for a few moments.

"So. Going back?"

"Yeah. I should have gone yesterday. No one opened the shop."

"Will that be bad for business?"

She nudged him. "Only if I'm really trying to be business woman of the year."

"Oh, so you're not?"

Aphrodite laughed. "Why should I? Running the store is fun, but if it was in a regular town? I'd be bored in a heartbeat." She smiled, slipping an arm inside his. "No. Fandom -- seems like home at the moment."

"I think that's good, Mom."

"Yeah." Finishing her nectar, she straightened, waiting for him to do the same. "I already said goodbye to Psyche and Bliss, so -- I'll just leave from here."

"You'll be okay?"

"I'll yell if I'm not." Placing her cup on the rail, she hugged him, hard, then took a step back. "I'll send you and Psyche a gift from the store." She winked, then laughed at his expression.

With a snap, she disappeared, leaving only her fading golden outline and Cupid's outraged, "Mo-om!" behind.

(ooc: Establishy. NFI, NFB for distance. Dite's headed back to the island!)
