I seriously think not. Here're some tidbits I came to realize about Kairi and wouldn't really mind a good debate about it - speficially the point raised in the topic.
Let this be named - The Essay, Appendix A, if only because it deals with Kairi and Namine both and what I believe to be misconceptions about it.
(
Lol rant )
Seeing some of what they've thrown so far into the series (assuming you read the interviews and Ultimanias since the games hold less then 40% of the series' plot xD), I seriously doubt there really is such a thing as 'goes too deep', especially when you come to romance. Nomura himself stated that he doesn't want to canonize any couples (aside from SoNami, lawl xD) and hence you get why 99% of SoKai is plot based and not true romance (that last 1% is them being childhood friends, making for only one percent since omfg, ok, so they're FRIENDS, big deal, go base romance with Selphie over it or something). This is seen even in CoM where Namine arguably said what she said about Kairi just to get Sora off her back, and if you throw some Days spoilers in, it adds up why the Org even fed to her Kairi's Sora's MIP and all that shiz - without true relations to how much Sora cares about Kairi if at all.
"I just hate how, regardless of everything in the game, Kairi is Sora's special person 'just because'."
That's something I actually came to appreciate in an amused way, since SoKai is the pinnacle of Nomura's views about leaving it up to the fans. You want to say SoKai exists? Wonderful, you've got more than your share of plot excuses. Think Sora sacrificed himself for Kairi in KH1 (while ignoring the immediate threat to the known universe...), believe Namine in CoM when she told Sora he loved Kairi (despite the Memories not really being Kairi dependant as there was another girl, and Namine even giving him a choice at the end, despite his love for Kairi supposedly about to overshadow the fake Memories at any given moment), and viola, Kairi's Sora's most important person.
You want to say SoKai doesn't exist? The games work even a tiny bit better as Sora's a better character than a guy that does what he wants for one girl while disregarding everything around him.
However, regardless, the only canon in the series is Sora's slip of the tongue about Namine, and that if we go by what we actually get to see (KH2 reunion scenes included), Sora's MIP is Riku.
"It's not that I HATE her. She just kinda sucks."
I hate her, and I think she sucks, but the two aren't related. She can have the worst plot relevance and importance and zero development and what not, and I could still like her. It's just that when they chose to actually show her, they had her betray her assigned role of being sweet and adorable and to actually care about Riku (I love most the people that tell me it's because she's a PoH. Ok, plot based only means you're supporting my claims about her being bitchy xD so she'll hopefully get better in KH3, so what?).
As for the essay, iono. I think I'll try and work on it more after I play through Days, seeing how it'll give me some more Riku-Namine interaction material.

I really can't wait for Days to come out. I'm sure it'll leave me feeling angry when I finish it, but it's bound to be great. Unfortunately, I saw so many spoilers so there won't be too many suprises. >_<
"It's just that when they chose to actually show her, they had her betray her assigned role of being sweet and adorable and to actually care about Riku."
Oh geez. It's like Riku doesn't even exist in her world. I remember disliking her a little because of her obnoxious giggle/laugh in KH1, and when she suggested to leave on the raft without Riku, she hit the nail into her coffin. UGH. >_>
And when Riku proceeded to go through so much to help her get her heart back, WHEN SHE JUST IGNORES HIM, I was so pissed. But then I kinda figured he was doing it, not only because he cares for her but because of Sora. You know, making him jealous etc etc...
And yes, I did read a lot of essays. I'm not sure if I got around to all of them but I certainly got to most. It is pretty deep, but since Disney is involved with it, I always just figure that it can't be THAT serious.
But it is. (Sadly, Jiminy's journal doesn't really help...)
There are so many relationship debates, it's crazy. And apart from that, the story line.
There are just so many things I love about the series, Kairi not being one of them. >_<
I really hate how she just pops out of the wood work every once in a while just so you don't forget she exists.
Not to mention how she ruins good moments, like when Riku and Sora were reunited.
Granted, he probably would have left if Kairi wouldn't have stopped him...
But I was really looking forward to that moment. And I really didn't picture her in it. BUT THAR SHE BLOWS. :O
I'm rambling now. D:
Sorry.
But I have another question.
What do you think about the Riku Replica?

You bothered not only reading my shiz, but also replying to it. It's the least I can do :)

Why angry? D: Kairi influence? Don't. It has so little and of laughable quality XD;
But meh. I want BBS more. And I want a PSP XD;

I KNOW! I kind of liked her and amused myself with the concept of SoKai, and blamed the giggle on the voice actor. Not the character's fault, right? But then she pulled the raft comment and 10 minutes into the game, she was dead to me o_o
"And when Riku proceeded to go through so much to help her get her heart back, WHEN SHE JUST IGNORES HIM, I was so pissed. But then I kinda figured he was doing it, not only because he cares for her but because of Sora. You know, making him jealous etc etc..."
If you read my other essays (which I'm pretty sure you did xD) you'd know that's my view on it as well. You kind of can't see it in any other way after the scene in Traverse Town, and Riku's comments later on. He didn't care about Kairi, dissing her twice before, and after Maleficent fueled the fire of his jealousy, all of a sudden he HAD to save Kairi, and Kairi wasn't looking for them anymore, but needed to be saved, etc. "What do you care?!", "are they that important to you? More important than old friends?" He thought Sora didn't care about him, so he went after the person Sora did seem to care about - being Kairi.
The sad thing is, that even Sora's concern towards Kairi can be seen as not his fault, because he had her Heart in his Body. People can argue it didn't affect him all they want, we SAW that it DID. Nothing's confirmed, true, but you cannot and must not rule out the possibility that that's why Sora cared so much. And once her Heart was out - bam. She'd get in his way, she's left to rot away in Traverse Town, and it was all about Riku from that point onwards. And it's not like Sora didn't have anything to do with her anymore so it was legit - he treated Namine completely differently when he left her behind, after all.
:\ really. SoKai is such a nonexistent couple.
"And yes, I did read a lot of essays."
...durr. Read whole post before replying XD;
"I'm not sure if I got around to all of them but I certainly got to most. It is pretty deep, but since Disney is involved with it, I always just figure that it can't be THAT serious."
With the PoHs all being Disney characters, I think that's not true. Disney might be why they're trying so desperately to feed us SoKai (since SoRiku's being gay, and SoNami can't be accepted since Namine's a witch, and Darkness affiliated what with being a Nobody), but Nomura still didn't canonize SoKai. That means he'd keep up the act, but give us enough ways in which to nullify it through the plot. And I'm sorry, Sora did NOT sacrifice himself for Kairi's sake in KH1. So you see where I'm going at here.
"There are just so many things I love about the series, Kairi not being one of them. >_<"
I do believe Kairi is about the only thing I don't like about the series from inside the series.
What I dislike outside the actual game is Nojima (KH2's scenario writer). He needs to die XD
"I really hate how she just pops out of the wood work every once in a while just so you don't forget she exists. "
That's why CoM was fun :D because Sora DID forget about her XD

I know T_T Namine should've been the one to bring them together, since she worked so hard to get Sora to wake up, and went through those months with Riku, while Kairi just shrugged Riku off as being able to take care of himself. Came looking for THEM my behind, she came only for Sora. Guh.
"Granted, he probably would have left if Kairi wouldn't have stopped him..."
Unless they'd have changed the scene as a whole. Namine could've stopped him, and I do believe - without even clinging onto his arm like that.
"I'm rambling now. D:
Sorry."
It's all good XD
"What do you think about the Riku Replica?"
He's a drama queen and ever so gay for Sora.
I'm gonna need a more specific question if you want a serious answer XD

That was so gross. >_>
It kinda makes me mad how she let Sora talk to Riku just letting him believe he was Xehonort's heartless.
She stood, gawked while listening to Sora's little thank you, then proceeds to leach onto Riku going, "Don't go Riku!!!111!"
It WOULD have been so much better with Namine doing the reuniting in a whole new scene, like you said. And if they still would have done the whole, 'let's join hands and see what Riku really looks like' thing, I believe it would have made more sense.
"I'm gonna need a more specific question if you want a serious answer."
I don't have a better question. He was just one of my favorite characters in CoM and I wanted to know what you thought of him. That's about as deep as it gets. XD
AND YAY FOR NO KAIRI IN DAYS.
But who knows, maybe they'll ruin it with Xion. I do have high hopes for her though. ^_^

I honestly believe she wanted him to leave, but seeing Sora's reactions, realized that if she did and Sora found out - despite it being Sora, in Sora's way still - he never would've forgave her. Hence why she did it, despite not even bothering to welcome him back home.

Mmhm. Because she'd be related to the both of them or something :3 and she could've dug up Sora's Memories of Riku, thus helping us get even more emotional, and for Sora to better realize who it was standing right there with him.
Certainly would've given me one less thing to be mad about, being that Kairi doesn't care about the plot. Ok so she was saved by a stranger that reached in through a CoD and started fading on her. Ok so she was saved by Xehanort who the blonde stranger said was Riku and she just bought it. And then she had the audacity to tell Sora she came to look for Riku too.
I mean, what?! Good lord! Has the girl no substance to her character?!
...I guess not. Otherwise why piece together the opening menu movies' text lines into the letter she sent Sora? XD;
"I don't have a better question. He was just one of my favorite characters in CoM and I wanted to know what you thought of him. That's about as deep as it gets. XD"
I love him, don't get me wrong, but I have a hard time for the most part seeing him as his own character, unlike Namine and Roxas for instance. He has his differences from the real Riku, which is why, sadly, I cannot really use him to base RiNami potential (that came later though. Help me out here, Days). Don't really know what else to say about him though, aside from lol he didn't die in the manga xD; but that's because we barely saw what happened to Riku in there, so they couldn't be bothered with it.
The Riku vs Riku fight was amazing though. Heart-string pulling~
"AND YAY FOR NO KAIRI IN DAYS.

They kind of do ruin it with Xion, as far as no Kairi is concerned. But it's the standard "let's use her to say Sora likes Kairi while putting in all the plot reasons for people to say that's not true, and disregard that fact for 90% of the game!"
Or so I hope :\ there's a limit to how much people can tell me in light of not wanting to be properly spoiled. But I do hope that percent won't be too low.
