[This fic is written as if Izanagi was never brought to the Velvet Mall. Therefore, he never got a heads up to any future events that might occur in his timeline nor did he set off the catalyst in his relationship with Thanatos. So...yeah, in the original timeline, its stuck on reversed!rank 2 and Thanatos would rather not deal with the whiney Japanese guy who can't seem to accept that his WAIFU IS DEEEEEEEAAAAAD when he has to be in a million+ places at once. That and once Thanatos returns home from the Velvet Mall/Sisyphus' closet, he would never seek out Izanagi and strike up a friendship that for some reason got stuck at rank 6 since the Renaissance. ...Yeah. Their relationship is a timey whimey ball of doom.
I will someday throw in a fic that details how the timeline changed thanks to the mall...which yes, means an alternate ending of sorts.
Because I'm a lazyarse, I'll add on new sections on this one post when inspiration strikes me. Also, fear my writing style. Fear it I say.
Also, spoilers concerning Hypnos and Thanatos' future and possible mythology fail. :D; *shot*]
-1991 AD-
-Lord Susano-O's abode, Yomi-
"Escaped? What do you mean she escaped?" Izanagi didn't know it was possible to escape Yomi after he sealed the entrance...
Susano-O fidgeted under his father's gaze, "Ah, yes. She just broke out a few hours ago before you got here. I'm not even sure how she moved that boulder - Ah, where are you going? You're not going to that part of Yomi are you? The Shikome are in a frenzy right now and they still remember your escape so-" His father raised a hand to silence his rambling.
"But I have to see it with my own two eyes how you, Susano-O, Lord of Yomi, have let this happen without you noticing?"
"Father, I don't see and know everything that occurs in Yomi. How was I supposed to know she's been plotting to break out of here?"
"Has she ever mentioned any of her plans to you? Susano-O sighed.
"Why are you so concerned of Mother's absence? Is this about the mortals? In case you haven't noticed, there are at least six billion of them and her personally taking a thousand mortals souls to the afterlife everyday isn't going to change anything when there are a lot more born!"
Izanagi halted in his path to the main entrance, where the boulder once stood. It wasn't just moved, it was blasted into dust. "I...want to redeem myself to her. And just when I finally got the courage to descend to her home and confront her...She's gone."
"What are you going to do then, Father?" Izanagi turns to face his son, his expression setting on determination.
"I'm going to look for her."
--------
He spent six months searching and asking gods from other Pantheons if anyone has seen her to no avail.
In Olympus, Hera mentioned that Nyx and Erebus were planning something and it may have to do with how Hypnos and Moros have been scouring the Earth in a fruitless attempt to figure out why their brother Thanatos gave up his physical form a few centuries ago (so that's why everyone couldn't feel his presence all of a sudden...). Or it may have to do with that foolish rich man in Japan who had discovered a prophesy that Cassandra made anonymously once to see if anyone would finally believe her without knowing it was from her. One that spoke of the world ending when humanity wishes for death.
And if Izanagi, Hera asks, ever comes across Zeus, please tell him that she's planning to make his favorite kind of ambrosia tonight so it would be best if he would temporarily cease chasing mortals and come home right now, thank you.
Izanagi skipped Egypt. Most of the gods there are trapped in their section of the Underworld after the Exodus incident and gaining entry requires being dead and successfully passing Ma'at's feather test. Izanagi didn't want to risk it. He knew how it would turn out.
Even Yahweh wasn't very helpful. He had the amused air of knowing something Izanagi didn't and the tone in His voice suggested that Izanagi should figure it out by himself while He busily sculpted...something out of clay.
Damn omnipotent/omniscient bastard.

"Father has been seeking Meng Po's counsel," Tsuku-yomi announced to his siblings one day.
"What for?" asked Amaterasu.
"Is he trying to find Mother?" said Susano-O. His older brother and sister stared at him.
"Why would he?" Amaterasu was confused. "Isn't Mother in Yomi?"
"She...escaped. I don't know how but she did."
"But we would've seen her roaming Japan!" Tsuku-yomi pointed out. He and Amaterasu always watched over the Mortals even while it was their turn to be the moon and sun.
"How is visiting Meng Po going to help Father?" said Amaterasu.
"Is he...trying to lure her out by dying as a mortal? He did mention that he wanted to redeem himself to her..." Susano-O spoke aloud. But what if he attracts the disembodied Thanatos instead?
"Is that why he's been acting differently lately?" said Tsuku-yomi, horrified.
"But can he be forgiven?" Amaterasu spoke the words that are in the siblings thoughts. "If she doesn't then reincarnating would be a waste of his time."
"He probably knows the risks," replied the God of the Moon.
"That may be true," agreed Amaterasu.
Worried silence filled the room. How can Father try this on his own? What if he fails because he didn't have help? And...What if there was another way that he didn't try yet?
--
"You look troubled, Susano-O. What's wrong?" Kushinada said as she hemmed a kimono for a Shikome waiting in the next room.
"Izanagi believes reincarnating will help him search for Mother."
"He may have his reasons."
"But I don't see the point! There has to be another way for him to find Mother without becoming a mortal! There is so many ways he could fail."
"So why not help him?" his wife suggested.
He paused. Helping Father when he was banned from Heaven by him millennia ago? Come to think of it, if they succeed, then Father has to welcome him back.
"I'll think about it."
--
"Milady," said Suzuka Gongen, "what are you doing?"
"I'm making arrangements for when I reincarnate as a mortal," replied Amaterasu to her new handmaiden before handing a scroll to Hermes who then departed with a message to all gods of the sun.
"Why for?"
"Izanami is missing and my father believes reincarnating will lure her out. It sounds so ridiculous that it might work."
"So you're going to help him, milady?" the demonness tried to quell the doubt rising within her.
"As much as I feel that I might not be of great help, yes." She looks outside where her brother shines upon Japan. Suzuka watches her, filled worry and doubt for her new mistress. Amaterasu brought her in when she appeared, asking her to teach her how to be more feminine (as much as a demon warrior can be, anyway). She ended up being her main attendant and unofficial bodyguard. But lately, seeing the beautiful goddess made her feel odd in her stomach. And hearing her announce her plans of reincarnating for her father didn't help things at all.
"He will be seeing Meng Ho soon. I shall be going now." Suzuka watched in despair as Amaterasu left the room. Biting away fear, she ran after her.
"Milady, wait! I'm coming too!"
--
"Soon it will be time for you to live as a mortal again, my friend," said Sukuna Hikuna. Yamato Takeru nodded.
"Yes, so it seems. I will go see Meng Ho tomorrow to make arrangements."
--
Rakuten Mao felt bored and restless. Demon Lord this. Demon lord that. Same old crap.
Screw it. Let's become a mortal. Now that would be interesting.
--
Kanzeon felt the worry and sadness coming from Izanagi and his youngest children (as much as Amaterasu, Tsuku-yomi, and Susano-O can be young anyway). Why cling to such desires that hurt you the most? She sometimes wondered why mortals and her fellow gods do this and it seemed so foolish. So...unenlightening.
Perhaps she should do an experiment...
--
"I believe I have found the couple who can suit your needs. The Setas' line of work require them to move from place to place. Despite this, they wish to have a child. It may be hard for your reincarnation but perhaps it will pay off eventually when you find what you seek, Izanagi." Meng Ho said as she peered into her mirror.
"I see. Then I'll go with them."
"You don't want to hear of the other families?"
"No, I don't."
"Then I wish you a pleasant journey." Meng Ho raised a hand and chanted a spell at Izanagi whose vision started to fade as her chanting took effect.
I am coming to get you, Izanami.
He heard someone cry "Father!" and felt hands catching him as all went black.
