My friend Ari Neimand came to visit last night. We met back around high school, he lived in my neighborhood and met my brother first. After he graduated highschool he moved to Israel and joined the Israeli army. He met his future wife Danika in Israel, she was from Canada. So they settled in British Columbia and now he's a farmer there.
So to get away from the cold this Christmas they took a road trip to Mexico. On the way back they stopped in Austin to see me (and Nate).
It was so great seeing him, I hadn't seen him since I was sophomore in high school. He graduated at the end of my sophomore year and took off for Israel.
They showed up around 6 and I was making us some stuffed pasta shells and salad. We ate and talked until midnight, the time just flew by.
I emailed in sick the next morning so I could spend the day with Ari and Danika. (I haven't seen him in almost 20 years and who knows when I'll see him again so I felt playing hooky from work was justified.)
We woke up and I made muffins w/fresh blueberries (yummmmm!) and coffee. We left Nate sleeping and set off to Mt. Bonnell. It was a beautiful day and Mt. Bonnell was desolate so it was really nice. Then we went to some of the shops on South Congress. Found a cool little herb shop that had tea pots, incense, soap, jewelry, and many other little neat things.
After that we were pretty hungry so we picked up Nate and went to chow down on some Indian food at the Bombay Cafe, it was so good.
We came back home and it was time for Ari and Danika to head up to Ft Worth. They are going to stay with his mom but they plan on visiting Eika and Corey...I know Eika is excited too.
Talked to my dad a little bit later and he was telling me about his plans for the summer, various trips. His trip to Scotland came up and I thought it was cutting it close to our road trip over July 4th. I asked him about it and that's when he said he planned on going to a July 4th party and taking his new girlfriend and that it was important that she be accepted into the group.
I reminded him of our plans, pulling up the email dating back to a few days before Christmas.
Well he forgot.
And his new girlfriend being accepted is really important to him. He then hastily added that our trip is important too, but I'm not dumb. I know I'm not really important to him.
I'm really hurt but I told him that I gave him a pass this time but if it happened again then there would be a problem. So now I have this time off over July 4th and nothing to do.
But more than that, I'm hurt that I'm not that important to my dad. I mean I've known it most of my life...but I thought maybe this time would be different.
Wondering if I should take back my vacation request at work or just go ahead and take it. It'll be July 4th weekend so staying at any hotel will probably be too pricey and where would we go? I guess we could go to Marfa. Or maybe I could use the money I was going to save for something like a washer/dryer...we do need that.
