Another rises from the ashes.

Uaaa... This place is pretty neat. Some kind of, uhm...? Hans would know the word. Something. Not Atria, but nothing I've seen before, either...

[ She grins. ] Wait 'til Annette hears about this.

[ Oh, by the way, her left arm is in a sling. ... yeah. ]

[At this point, Kougaiji is used to randomly ending up in places with absolutely no clue as to how or why he's shown up there. He crosses his arms and looks around, and if he's at all impressed, he's not showing it.]

So. Where's this?

I have no idea. Well, maybe a few... What about you?

[Headtilt]

I have no idea. If I did, I wouldn't have asked. [He doesn't say it in a snappish way. Just stating fact. Typical Kougaiji.] What "few" ideas do you have?

It could be a dream! Most likely, most boring. Someone could have been messing with the boundaries between the dimensions, but that would take a lot of power, and I have no idea why they'd mold reality into something like this even if they did.

[... Big talk for a little girl. He's interested now.]

Unless the gods are having fun by making us meet in the same dream, I don't think we're dreaming. I know nothing of other... dimensions, so I can't comment on that.

It's possible that there isn't a person behind this place, though. [He's definitely seen that one before...]

What else would be behind it?

Itself. It could be pulling people on its own. ... It's not likely [he hopes] but it's possible.

Neeever heard of that one before. No one in the Magicians' Order has ever proposed a theory like that... but that doesn't mean it's impossible, no.

[He shrugs.] I've been in two places like it. This had better not be the third.

Where are you from, if you don't mind my asking? [It clearly isn't Earth. At least, it isn't India.]

Cicardum. [ Which is probably not the name I've used elsewhere, but let's with it for now! /too lazy to look it up ] Atria. What about you? How were those other two places like it?

Earth. India, specifically. [He shakes his head.] I've never heard of Atria.

The other two places... After randomly appearing there, you were tied to it. In one, I was trapped and couldn't return home. In the other, I was free to go between home and the new... place... as I pleased. Neither had a physical person behind it, pulling strings or what have you. It simply acted as though it had its own form of sentience.

I've never heard of Earth or India, either. I mean, there's the "earth" element, but it's not a place...

Two places with a form of sentience? ... maybe I should work on a paper about that.

It's both an element and a place where I come from. Some languages bother to have different words for the two. Most don't.

A paper? [Okay, now he's really interested. Borderline amused. Is this child some sort of scholar?] For what, exactly?

That's pretty weird.

The Magicians' Order. I might be able to get them to sponsor my research for it, which is something I've been trying to do all year. [ Not... that Hans knows this, but she's been trying to make it a surprise. >: Too bad the Order's never taken a bite of her bait. ]

[He shrugs.] Humans are often arrogant enough to believe they are the only ones around. Why have different words for the world you live in and the manipulation of it? [He rolls his eyes.]

That would involve finding sentient locations, though. That, or finding more people who have been to places like I have. I'm sure just one source - even if it is first-hand - won't be enough.

Because they are different things. The world we live in is defined by the people within it. The manipulation of it is defined by its composition, like the minerals and other things under the surface.

Maybe not, but if I can recreate it on a smaller scale, or propose the theory of doing so, it might be enough to catch their interest at first. And-hey, what about this place?
