Tenth Anniversary

Apr 21, 2007 05:11

On April 20, 1997, I went to Geocities Athens Chat for the first time. It was not the first chatroom of my early Net life, but it had a huge and immediate impact. On that very night, I met Melisa. Within a few days, I'd met several people who remain among my best friends, to this very day ( Read more... )

Curiously, I and at least one other mutual aquaintance of ours, have exactly the same impression:
"Seems like it was about ten years on that we first met in Athens. The thundering of philosophy falling 'round our ears; lightning strikes of ideas flashing before our eyes"
(You know you're getting old when you start quoting yourself.)
Sadly, that particularly interesting era has passed. But new, and hopefully equally interesting, ones are before us.
Your adventures at SCAD, for instance.
And was it really April 20th, 1997? Time is the great betrayer.

Yes sir, I well remember that my first day there was April 20 because of meeting Melisa. :) I may have met you and Jenn that very night, as well, though I'm not sure. It couldn't have been much later.

If I'm not mistaken, chatrooms in general have fallen somewhat by the wayside with the rise of IM, phone text, and perhaps also the extravagant rise of online multimedia. But none of these things are at all sociologically equivalent to a chatroom, of course. Nor is anything in RL. I'd like to explore modern chatrooms sometime, assuming any are interesting; but in addition to being very busy with more practical matters, I'm still too close to the social atrocities of my former chat self! I recoil in horror whenever I start feeling a little like that person again. I suppose that'll change. :)

you actually didn't meet descartes at all in athens (if so, it was fleeting) -- you met several years later via my friend-match-making services (or something) if memory serves. you were both in separate camps in athens (the night crowd and the morning crowd) -- i bridged the two cuz i didn't sleep back then until morning.

I think you're soooooo wrong! I quite well remember meeting Descartes in Athens. It involved an argument he was in with Anne. (Shocking, eh?)

On the other hand, my brain's made of swiss cheese.
