"You said it." After Haku had called and they were properly filled with meat, Duo took the opportunity to teach Sam a bit about the D-readers. Keep this digital meat stored away? Still warm? Until they call it again? Perfect. They also had veggies and potatoes. A full meal for when they needed it almost.
As far as what he mentioned to Haku, he had to wonder if she was going to bring up what he said about his band in conversation. That would be interesting.
"Let's chill at a table for a while, huh? Go pick one out and I'll get some beers."
Duo looked up to the back as they entered the bar, spotting Haku bent over one of the sound consoles, fiddling with the functions. She didn't see them just yet, her head down, long white ponytail hanging over her shoulder and a focused expression on her face.
He nodded to Sam, figuring he'd let her work until she realized they'd arrived.
"Alright. She'll probably be done soon," he said, taking up a chair at a table about halfway in to the bar.
Sam went to the bar and retrieved three bottles for the three of them to enjoy and some water as well. Once finished, he navigated his way to the table, casting a glance over to where his son had directed. So that's Haku? In person?
Once he sat down and slid the beer over to his kid and set the rest down, he smirked. "Haku said I should play with her sometime."
She had an interesting look, if nothing else. Though from Japan, she didn't exactly look fully Japanese, with silver white hair that went past her waist, big bright red eyes and very pale skin. Really she looked more albino than anything, though that wasn't the reason for her appearance. That was something Duo hadn't quite explained to Sam yet.
"Heh. Not surprised. She was a musician in her world. Her whole family was, really," Duo said, then added after a pause, "... which... actually brings me to something I should probably tell you about her..."
"What's that?" Duo asked, taking a long sip of his beer and looking on towards Haku again. What could Duo tell him that was stranger than what he's already seen here in the digital world? He prepared himself though, there was always the chance it was a little beyond his depth.
But in the long run? It didn't matter. Duo's friends here seemed to care a great deal about him, and that was far more telling than anything else.
"Well uh... she's not human," Duo answered, looking back at her. She finally looked up as if sensing that she was being talked about and waved with a smile, holding up a finger to indicate she'd be done in a moment.
"She's an android. Her 'family' is actually a series of virtual idols from Japan in her world, and a lot of them are here now. It's all pretty damn impressive, considering not even our time got that far with robotics."
Not human? No shock there. At that news he looks over at Haku again as he listened to Duo speak. He took another sip and mulled it over for a while before responding.
"If I hadn't been born into a world were there'd be mobile suit rock em sock em robots running around? I may not have been able to believe that. Cats talk, demons read your soul by singing... That actually sounds almost normal to me." Sam chuckled a bit, a brow raising. Yes. That's what he and his buddies call their oppressive robot soldiers back home.
"Wonder what... So she sings because that's how she's programmed? Wonder what that sounds like."
The comment about mecha got and odd look from Duo, but he dismissed it quickly for the current topic.
"Basically. But she decided after being here a while she wanted to try other things, so she's working at the DATS garage as a mechanic now. She's surprisingly good at it, too. Fixed my bike more than once. She still sings, though, but it's when she wants to as opposed to when she's told to. As far as what she sounds like... ? Well..."
Haku finally made her way over to the table, smiling brightly with a small wrapped package in her hands.
So his sense of humor was hit and miss, and there was a chance he and his buddies were drunk when they came up with that. Heh. He had seen Haku approach as Duo spoke and his lips turned to a grin from meeting Duo's odd look with one of his own.
"The question is what does Haku sound like when she sings. You don't have a CD, do you?"
"Ah... I don't, I'm sorry, Aston-san. I haven't recorded anything since I arrived here almost three years ago..." Haku explained as she sat down. Duo slid a beer over to her which she accepted with a thankful nod, putting the package down.
"I could always play something later though, if you'd like me to," she added, gesturing to a deep purple Fender guitar leaning in a stand on the stage. "I brought it with me, just in case."
"Sounds like a good time to me, Haku. We did come here for some birthday entertainment after all." He pointed out, looking towards the fender.
"And nice guitar. I think I might have to get one one of these days." That? Nice. A little present. It was always fun to watch Duo open his gifts, especially as a child.
"Wonderful!" Haku chirped happily, putting her hands together. She smiled at Duo, nodding to the package.
"I wasn't sure what to get you, but I figure anything for your bike usually works..."
"Oh, sweet, more stuff for my bike? Ha, best birthday ever!" Duo grinned, taking the box and unwrapping it. A few items were inside, individually wrapped in lightly colored paper. He unwrapped the first one, holding a small box with a clip on it up. "What's this?"
"That's for your D-Comm! You can put it on your bike and it'll put the signal for voice function to your helmet when you're riding."
"Whoa... neat!"
"And there's a new cover for your bike, and a small portable tool kit, in case you need it on the road!"
"Damn, Haku. Between you and Sam I've got the whole package goin'!" Duo grinned, "Thanks."
Haku nodded, then turned to Sam.
"That guitar was a gift from my adopted big brother here, for my first birthday in the Digital World. I wouldn't mind you playing it if you wanted to, though."
"Yep. I got him a new jacket and gloves. Among other things." Sam was interested in the cards, but completely unsure of what they were or what they were for. He was still new at this! He relaxed back into his seat and nursed his beer, watching them interact.
Hm. Know what? Maybe he needed to get a bike himself one of these days. Add that to the list.
"Heh. Well, I do need to get back into the practice. I'll give it a shot. There's a chord from an old white stripes song I use to get back into things."
"Well aside from Allen and Quatre, there's not much else Duo is attached to here, so I figured the bike was the best bet," Haku added, watching as Duo took out the small tool kit and started messing with it, taking out the tools and looking at them.
"Ah, well, I can play something, or you can. I'm fine with either!"
Aside from him, or rather it was a very tentative attachment. They were growing on each other, or he was growing on Duo. As for him he had no qualms about giving Duo the same kind of affection he had for Cody, but without being so direct about it.
Haku had noticed the fact that Duo was still calling him "Sam" and not Dad, but she knew it was going to take time for him to get used to it. The fact that they were hanging out so much was evidence enough that Duo liked him despite how odd it was.
"Ah, I'd like that! Shall we go now? The stage is empty."
As far as what he mentioned to Haku, he had to wonder if she was going to bring up what he said about his band in conversation. That would be interesting.

"Ask me what, Duo?"
