Raito was surprised to say the least. He laughed and looked at the cake then his sister with a smile. "Thanks Rei. I should have known you would do something like this."

"Of course!" Rei chirruped, moving to sit down next to him on the couch, "Our first birthday together again in years! I have to make a big deal!"

"True true. So, what are the plans?" He placed a bookmark in his book and set it aside. He turned to her with a smile and leaned against the arm of the sofa.

"Well, I have a gift for you, too. But I was thinking we could go out to dinner first. There's also something I want to do with just you later..."

"Alright. Dinner sounds nice. Hey, since I'm the birthday boy, I get to invite whoever I want to come, right?"

"Of course. Who do you want to invite?"

"The family. You, me, Mitch, and Duo."

Rei blinked a few times, having a faint idea of what he was getting at, though she wasn't entirely sure.

"... why Duo?"

Raito smirked. He had a plan.

"Duo is part of the family."

"Well..."

Rei couldn't argue that. Not without sounding like a horrible hypocrite. She was always spouting stuff about them being her 'ohana' and if she went back on that now...

"... he is. But... without Allen? Are you sure that's a good idea?"

"If Allen could come, I'd invite him. But he's still in the hospital. Besides. An ohana should stick together through tough times, not tear each other apart."

"Mitch has been doing that regardless of how many times I've told him not to..." Rei sighed, slumping a little. "He doesn't even have to say anything to Duo for him to look like a kicked puppy when Mitch is around..."

Rai brought his hand up to his face and a serious expression covered her little brother's face.

"Just give this a try. I'm sure something good will come out of it in the end."

"... alright. I'll give him a call."

"Thank you Rei." He offered a big smile. Whatever was going on in his head, he was sure it would work.

Still unsure, Rei stood and went to the kitchen, staring at her D-Comm for a few minutes before pressing Duo's comm information on the screen.

"'ello!" Duo answered after a few beeps.

"Duo? It's Rei."

"Oh, 'sup?"

"Uh... Raito wanted to invite you to his birthday dinner..."

There was a very long pause from Duo's end.

"... Raito your little brother also related to Mitch by proxy Raito?"

"Yes. That Raito."

"... why?"

"Because..." Rei sighed, closing her eyes for a moment to gather her composure. "Because we're family, Duo. Even if Allen can't be here right now, you're still a part of our family. He wants you there. Please don't disappoint him?"

Another stretch of silence. Somewhere in the background, there were voices overlapping, and quiet clattering of dishes.

"... I can't promise its going to go well, Rei."

"I know. Please?"

"Alright. I'll meet up with you guys after I get off. I gotta call Yuri and let him know I'm not making it to training tonight."

"Okay... and Duo?"

"Yeah?"

"Thank you."
