Who: Tournament tryouts and spectators!
What: First Neon City Martial Arts Tournament Tryouts
When: February 4nd 2011; 2PM onward
Where: Neon City High School Gymnasium
The gym was buzzing with excitement as watchers and participants filed in for the tryouts. There weren't a lot of them, all things considered, and from the look of it most of the spectators were there to cheer on people they knew, but Alice knew that come the actual tournament day the entire place would be packed.
People loved a good fight, sanctioned or otherwise.
Once all the participants were assembled on the main mat, and her judges were ready at the table behind her, Alice Hamilton stood with the young Suoh Takamura and the two made their way over to address the potential fighters. She didn't bother with a microphone - she'd been doing this long enough to know how to make her voice carry to all of them seated on the mat before her.
"Hello and welcome to the tryouts for the first ever Neon City Martial Arts Tournament! I am Alice Hamliton, owner of Hamilton Karate in Axoyri, and this is Suoh Takamura, my assistant and fellow judge for this competition. Behind me are our two other judges - Katz and Illyria.
Both Suoh and Alice bowed respectfully to those on the mat before Alice continued.
"Now the way we are doing this might seem a little weird, but there is an explanation behind that. Normally when a competition is held, participants are chosen by their instructors in the various schools in an area based on their skills and merits within their respective classes. However we're not really allowed that chance here, so instead this tryout will serve that purpose. This is NOT the competition, but I'm sure if you're here you already know that.
What you will be doing, rather than facing off against each other, is going against Suoh here. Suoh is a very capable opponent and has been training in many styles of martial arts most of his life, and has agreed to be the sparring judge for this round. When we call your name, you will be given two tests - offensive and defensive. In offensive, you will attack Suoh and he will only block. Defensive will obviously be the reverse of that.
This is not a test of brute force or strength. This is to watch you and judge your skill in comparison to others and decide if you should move on to the exhibition matches in March. You do not need to go all out, and please, don't make Suoh break anyone here."
That got a little laugh out of everyone, though Suoh blushed noticeably over it while scratching the back of his head, ever the modest teen even about his impressive skills. He knew his friends were watching and were among those chuckling at the comment.
"Now, that said, I have to lay down some ground rules.
Firstly, no powers. We are fully aware that not everyone here is completely human. It would be a major disadvantage to anyone who IS to be put up against some one who can level them out with more than a punch. This is about what you can bring with your fists and your feet, and anyone who forgets that will be disqualified. No exceptions.
Secondly, while I would like to be able to say we have a match available for melee weapons, we weren't able to get the okay for that at this time. Sorry folks, maybe next year. For now, no weapons at all. Same rule as the one I just stated - instant disqualification for anyone seen bringing or using a weapon anywhere on the mat.
Thirdly, if you or your partner at any time during the tryout or the actual tournament get injured beyond minor bruising, the match will be halted. We have a lovely volunteer from DATS medical here for first aid purposes," Alice indicated a small red headed woman in a small section off to the side with a red cross sign on the wall above her. She waved to the crowd with a smile and Alice continued, "and only if she gives the O.K. to come back in will the injured party be allowed on the mat. Of course we have the proper padding, gloves and footwear for anyone who needs it to hopefully prevent any injuries, but hey, these things happen.
Also, when we call you up, we ask that you tell us your name, age, years training, and style of fighting if you have a specific one. We do have the paperwork we received from the entrants, but this is just for double checking and for the sake of those watching."
With a smile, Alice clapped her hands together, ready to start.
"Alright then! We would like to begin the tryouts. Are there any questions or concerns before we get started?"
