It had been several weeks since Kazuma's last nightmare. Nadeko's presence at his side, even her presence just in the room had done something to calm the fears that only rose at night, and thankfully he had been getting enough sleep to battle the illness that had fallen on him with that help.
But this night, they returned, stronger and more vivid than ever. He felt the hands pushing him down, pinning him, holding him as he struggled and tried to break free. They were avatars, every single one of them. Possessed avatars under the will of Love Machine. One was on his head, holding him roughly by the hair, forcing his gaze up no matter how much he tried to look away. He was screaming, had been screaming, so much that his throat was raw, but for some reason no sound was coming out in the horrible twisted dream scape.
He couldn't help. He couldn't break free. He could only watch.
In the waking world, his twisting and thrashing only grew worse as the minutes wore on. A scream escaped him, followed by a harsh, frightened sob as he rolled over and away from Nadeko, clutching a pillow to his chest tightly.
Kazuma's thrashing around was the first sign to her that she needed to wake up. Something was wrong. Nadeko shot up in bed, cringing as she heard him scream. She saw he had moved away, and crawled over toward him, placing her hands onto his shoulder and shaking him a little.
"K-Kazuma-kun!" She cried out to him, trying harder to shake him awake.
"Kazuma-kun, wake up, it's just a nightmare!" she called out to him, hoping that by some miracle, her voice reached him.
"K-King! You have to wake up! King Kazma! Ki-awwwwh!" Lopmon had tried once more to wake up her partner, only to recieve a bunny kick to the head. She flew into the wall, hitting her head. She was out cold, which was probably for the best, considering any more negative emotions could have made her dark digivolve.
The rabbit continued to thrash and roll on the ground, the nightmare only getting worse as it went on. His mouth was open in an unheard scream, completely silent with the exception of the thuds and bumps he made against the floor.
Kazuma jerked awake with a sharp cry, breath coming in pained, heavy gasps. He turned a frightened look on Nadeko, taking a few seconds to realize he was back in the apartment, and no where near that terrible nightmare.
He opened his mouth to say something, but upon hearing the crash in the other room, his eyes only got wider.
"... shit! Kazma!" he yelled, getting to his feet a little too fast and crashing to his knees before he could even reach the door. He didn't hesitate in getting back up again, though, throwing the door open and running to the living room.
For a moment, Nadeko was relieved that he'd woken up. But then the crashes in the living room sounded at that moment, and Kazuma got up, only to fall down again.
And then get up again.
Nadeko stood up herself, rushing out after Kazuma.
The thuds and crashes only got worse as the two approached. As they entered the living room, Kazma's mouth opened wide and in Kazuma's voice the rabbit let loose a horrible scream. He cried out as if he was being murdered in his nightmare, only his fate was far worse. He thrashed more and screamed yet again, even louder this time, his voice rang out throughout the entire apartment.
He felt it all, the pain, the burning, all of it. It was too much for him. No amount of battle had ever hurt this much before. This was truly hell. This was his punishment for failing Player. Tears spilled down from closed eyes emotional pain mixing with the illusion of the physical pain.
Kazuma stumbled to a halt in the living room, visibly wincing at Kazma's pained scream. His heart was racing, flashes of his own nightmare playing through his mind, nearly as vivid as they were when he was still sleeping.
His hesitation only lasted a second, though, before he bolted over, dropping to his knees hard next to Kazma, latching on to one of his flailing arms.
Sleep had already started to fade when all the noise began, but Doumeki was still halfway dozing, thinking that the sounds were just in his mostly mundane dream. The scream was what made him jerk awake, though, damn near falling out of bed with the motion. He caught himself with the nightstand, though, straightening with a grumble of "Kazuma-kun is having another nightmare..."
He started to get out of bed, not caring if Watanuki was awake yet or not. He probably would be eventually, if it was as bad as it had been last time. When he heard the voice of the boy calling out to someone else to wake up, though, he stopped, already standing but not quite at the door yet.
As Kazuma grabbed him, the thrashing only worsened. Kazma cried out again, more tears streaming down his face. The arm Kazuma is attached to began to swing and thrash more. To the rabbit, it felt like another avatar had grabbed that arm and now he is trying harder to get it off. He struggled with all this might, his body thrashing with more power. Kazma let loose another cry, this one actually forming one word.
Kazuma refused to let go, even as Kazma started thrashing him about violently.
"WAKE UP!" he screamed shrilly, voice cracking as tears started to form in his eyes. It wasn't likely his cry reached the rabbit, as the boy wound up being tossed not a second later, crashing down on top of the coffee table hard enough to knock the wind out of his lungs.
"Kazuma-kun!" Nadeko shrieked, rushing over to him and making sure he was okay before wrapping her arms around him and clinging to him tightly, looking over to Kazma and biting her lip, tears forming in her own eyes. She rubbed Kazuma's back and tried to help him regain his breath.
"M-Maybe we should get some water to wake him up .."
"I have no idea..." Doumeki answered, staying where he was for a few more seconds. The noises and screams were just getting louder and more frantic, but when Nadeko shrieked, that was all the incentive he needed to rush out to the living room.
Kazuma slumped against Nadeko, having trouble finding his breath again from the pain radiating through his back, vision blurring slightly but his eyes on Kazma. His mouth moved, trying to say the avatar's name but finding no sound coming to his voice.
Doumeki stared at the scene in front of him, confused as hell but just as worried at the same time. Kazma looked like he was in pain, much the way Kazuma had the fist night he'd had his nightmare. But unlike Kazuma, the rabbit seemed to genuinely be trapped in the nightmare world, unable to tell reality from the dream.
He let a swear out under his breath, rushing in to try and subdue Kazma without waiting for Watanuki to even try and protest.
Following Doumeki into the front room, Watanuki hugged himself and looked worriedly at the giant rabbit on the couch, and Kazuma in Nadeko's arms. "Nadeoko-chan...Kazuma-kun...?"
The rabbit cried out again as Doumeki tried to subdue his movements, the weight adding to the horrors of his nightmare. He thrashed horribly and bucked, sending Doumeki flying at the wall. He screamed all the more, each one seeming to grow in volume until his voice cracked.
"PLAYER! PLAYER!! PLAYER!!!"
The fighting avatar called out, again and again for his Player, but he knew he couldn't hear him. He was trapped with Love Machine, being tormented for his failures. Kazma's entire body arched as he screamed again, the suddenly feelings of disgust and burning in his dream sent shivers down his body in reality. His eyes finally snapped open, his pupils the size of pins. He stayed in that horribly uncomfortable position, back arches, limps and neck stretched, his mouth still half way open from the last scream. He doesn't move. He stayed like that, eyes staring out at nothing, tears running down his face.
Doumeki hit the wall hard enough to shake it and rattle the near by window so much that it sounded as though it might just shatter from the nearby impact. He barely had the breath to let out a pained cry, sliding down the wall and slumping where he landed, unmoving.
Kazuma watched Doumeki fly, Kazma's pained, agonized screams ringing in his ears.
"Let... let me up, Nadeko-chan..." he managed to get out, breath still coming in wheezes and gasps but his tone determined as he tried to pull away from her. "I... I gotta help... l-let me help him..."
