When: December 21, afternoon
Rei hadn't thought anything of going back to finish her work earlier that morning, even though it was supposed to be that day off Jake promised her, mostly because Mitch had been nothing but quiet about her upcoming birthday the entire week. She herself so rarely made a big deal of getting another year older, so she thought that maybe, just maybe, he was starting to do the same.
But then, after dealing with the ornery mistletoe, Jake had brought up that Mitch might have been quietly planning something after all, and she started feeling guilty about leaving at all. He'd still been asleep when she'd gone, and the chances of her getting back before he woke up were slim, but she was willing to try.
She finished her work as quickly as she could manage, and rushed back to Axoyri, trying to get in to the house as quietly as she could. She was a mess, smudged in grease and still in her dirty overalls, but she figured if she could get to the shower it wouldn't matter.
Of course that depended on Mitch not catching her before she got there.
