With the engagement started, neither side was yet expected to score any significant blows. At best, it was a probing of each others' forces, and both sides were about to start learning quite a bit about the other.

Once the Inns' defenders responded to the initial attack, tell-tale "THUNT" sounds reported from the the attacking squad's lines as several smoke grenades were launched ahead of them, obscuring their attack in several thick clouds of dense white smoke. Gunshots and named attacks continued to launch toward the inns, and the Squadron's lieutenants moved into position to attack. Through the smoke, intense light began to build as two Shinduramon prepared their attacks, twin lightning bolts streaking towards the Inns' defenders a moment later.

Harder to see through the smoke, two Peacockmon were moving into position near the head of the advancing line, their semi-transparent wings shimmering. They weren't attacking just yet, leaving that to their comrades. For the moment, the lines were holding at a distance and laying down fire from the safety of the smoke.

From further back, Colonel Silphymon watched the battle as it began, assessing the inns' defenses for his forces' next charge.

With the light coming through, Terra gave a call of, "Everyone, attack!" because now they had to start attacking their opponents. In her Guardian form, she gripped her mallet and, much like her partner's attack, spun around, trying to blow away some of the on-coming smoke.

Gigasmon was, well, a tank. He could soak up damage and still attack, but he couldn't move quickly. So, using this to his advantage, he stood took the brunt of a Shinduramon attack, groaning as he did, and slammed his fists into the ground, directing an Earthquake attack towards the smoke-mob.

At the same time, Suzaku took flight, turning from Hawkmon to Aquillamon and cried, "WAVE LASER!" A wave of energy flew from his wings as he flapped them, into the smoke. He had no idea what he was hitting, but it was an enemy, and that's all that matters.

And Gaia?

Why, she fired the Warthog's main guns. As in rockets.

The Omega Sword copy at her side, Sasami stayed back, firing off bolts of Quintessence into the smokescreen, hoping to strike something in the confusion.

As well, Tenshi held back even as he stood ready as Grademon.

Cruger's Shadow Saber raised up to block the shots coming at him.

"This is nuts! What are these people thinking?!" Cruger shouted, wanting to press forward.

"They're not, sir!" Cerberumon shouted, launching Hellfire shots from its mouths, hoping to burn away the smoke and drive off anyone coming near.

"We have to push them back!" Jason shouted, firing his blaster through the smoke clouds.

As well, HishaRyuumon began firing its Jūouguruma attacks into the smoke screen, its spread shots aiming to hit anything trying to come through.

"No no no!" cried Havoc into his D-Comm as he ran back, attempting to dodge the blasts of thunder. "We can't push them back like this... we're outnumbered! We need to find a way of controlling how many come at us! Find some place where they can't just throw all of their attacks at us at - ONCE?!"

Havoc found himself being knocked to the side by Neemon, as they dodged a pair of grenades thrown their way. The soldier lay stunned for a moment.

A distance away, Mako, having been protected by her protect barrier, was engaging a Buraimon with her sword. As she overcame the bird digimon's own blade and delivered a slash, her partner, Stream Archelomon (evolved for the first time) attacked it with a whirlwind of vacuum blades.

She noticed something then. Where had that Kevin fellow gone off to?

A blur of green shot out from the roof into the smoke vanishing from sight.

Swooping down low Nefertimon began peppering the approaching line with her Nile Jewelry aiming more to keep the line from continuing their approch.

Meanwhile low to the ground raced a rabbit darting around the craters and bullet shots springing at the Peacockmon changing into a massive 490 LB solid muscle gorilla throwing his weight into trying to knock one of the two throwing both fists into it before swinging around for the other.

It was harder in these big battles without any range attacks.

"Sky Rocket!"

A barrage of missiles streaked through the sky at the airborn attackers spreading out to try and tag as many as it could.

"How about we try and get rid of some of that smoke?" Jinx called down to the heroes on the roof before hearing Havoc's suggestion.

"We have a broad building with almost nowhere to funnel the enemy into, what do you suggest?"

With the roar of her engine Agatha sprang forward kicking up turf behind her.

"God bless Sarge wherever he is!" Noir called as they raced along the field Gaia's fire and Lady Devimon's bats soaring at the enemy.

The return fire from the inns was inaccurate, but considerably more potent than the attacking force had expected. Several of the outlying soldiers on the lines took hits that sent them crashing down, or back. A few unlucky ones were 'tamaed, but even more came forward to fill the gaps.

And the Peacockmon were not just at the front of the lines to present tempting targets. Simultaneously, the two armored lieutenants shouted cries of "PEAHEN'S ASSISTANCE!" and flared their wings. Large rainbow-like barriers shot outward from their wings, shielding the troops from the worst of the wild shots. Beastboy's charge went largely unnoticed, and when he turned into a Gorilla, he indeed managed to send on of the two lieutenants flying back, dazing him. He ALSO managed to attract the attention of every soldier within twenty feet. A dozen guns turned towards him and opened fire even as he was turning towards the second Peacockmon.

The Shinduramon did not seem the least bit concerned. Already, they'd flushed out many of the opposition's heavy hitters and provoked a charge. Both perfects chose their targets, and sent lightning bolts streaking out towards them. One of them had taken aim at Noir's Lady Devimon, while the other was targeting Terra's Gigasmon. And all the while, the barrage of weapons fire was continuing.

Further back in the line, Colonel Silphymon was taking note of all of this. He couldn't see through the smoke any easier than the Inns' defenders could, but he knew his orders to his troops. For the most part, his men were holding their advance and attacking targets of opportunity. "Right! Thunderbird Squadron, move left! Peregrine Squadron, move right!" he yelled. "Take flanking positions and prepare to close the cage on them! Let's have this wrapped up in the next few minutes, shall we?!"

As the squadrons moved to their positions away from the present fight, Silphymon turned his attention back to the little skirmish off to their right. Surely, that must have been done by now...

Gigasmon groaned again, stumbling back, and meanwhile Terra...well, she listened to Havoc's suggestion.

"You want to a filter? I'll give you a filter!" She yelled and the ground in front of the group rose in a dome-like barrier. It collected around them, cracking at the attacks, but staying up.

Terra panted. "...Okay... This gives us some time."

"Good job!" Cruger said, relaxing a bit. "It'll give us time to prepare for other attacks."

With Terra a bit exhausted, he decided to take over in terms of setting others up.

"Those who can, defend from the rear! I don't doubt they'll just going to bust straight through, but that doesn't mean we can take any chances from other sides!"

There was the sound of two bodies hitting the ground behind at the back entrance of Terra's dome. Super Shinken Red rose to his feet, Firamon at his side. The reason for his lateness? He had been doing what he could to assess the oncoming forces... and what he perceived wasn't pretty. This situation was only now confirming every fear that had been growing over the past few months...

"You'll want to do more than that," he stated, stepping into the dome, while he reached down to remove something from his belt buckle. "This structure was a good idea to stave them off temporarily, but it'll only end up being that unless we do things to give us any sort of long lasting advantage..."

What he removed from his buckle was a dark red disc with the engraving of multiple dinosaur-like heads on it. Without even glancing, he nonchalantly flicked the Kyoryuu Disc in Mako's direction.

"Pull back, use the cover the Inns themselves would provide," he suggested. "They could potentially end up focusing on breaking through THIS for a moment, and while they're doing that we could be setting up ELSEWHERE. Because what we're seeing NOW? Is not an all out attack, nor are we seeing the bulk of what they're likely going to throw out."

He flicked open the black casing on his sword's guard, inserting another, red disc into it.

[Shishi Disc]

"They're feeling us out. We need to either delude them or give them something they're not expecting... Either way, barely two dozen humans & Digimon don't have enough firepower behind them to brute force our way through their front lines... we need a different way."

For his part? Robin was going to defend the front of the dome as long as possible, leaping off Greymon's back with staff in hand. Defending the rear might work, but regardless of which side they defended the enemy Digimon would charge from the front eventually.

"What would Batman do...?" he muttered while his eyes narrowed behind his mask.

"Probably have a list of every single one of your friends, enemies and ex-girlfriends in his belt." Greymon rumbled, having learned much about his Tamer's world...plus, being behind Robin meant he could hear what he said just as if he'd said it out loud.

"Not the time, X. Our main focus? Protecting the Inns and making sure we don't suffer anymore losses...than we already have!"
