He'd given away one of his advantages, that much there was no questioning. But it was a small price to pay for underestimating and opponent that had given him a challenge in the past.

When the pillars of Lina's Dug Haut erupted around him, he wasted no time in jumping out, using the pillars as spring-boards with which he could leap higher. There was only one reason to try and trap an opponent in such a narrow cage in the middle of a fight, and as he'd expected, the spike that erupted from the ground beneath him would have been quite messy.

It still could, as a matter of fact, but in his favor. Drawing Yamato swiftly at the peak of his leap, Vergil cleaved through the growing spike, cutting it loose from the growing pillar beneath it. Momentum did its job, with the pillar pushing the spike into the air while Vergil landed calmly atop one of the other pillars that Lina had provided. And then, he slammed a side-kick into the airborne spike and sent it hurtling towards Lina.

Matadormon, meanwhile, was unimpressed with his opponents. He could see both attacks coming a mile away, and dodging was simply a matter of leaping away. He landed on the hilt of the Omega Sword and sighed boredly. "What's the matter?" he asked disinterestedly. "Haven't you been training? I'd think a couple of bad thieves like you would know that they'd need to keep their skills up. My fault for assuming..."

Gourry'd taken a nasty boot to the face, but it would take far more than that to even slow him down. He landed several feet back from where he'd been kicked, just in time to see Vergil emerging from atop the stone prison Lina'd made for him. When the swordman sent the spike flying towards her, Gourry jumped backwards and swung his blade savagely into it, smashing it off-course and into rubble.

Landing beside Lina, he drew a quick breath and raised his sword in front of him again. "Okay, this isn't going well," he said quickly. "Tell me you've got a plan."

"What are you insinuating?!" Mystimon yelled angrily at Matadormon, launching several more Core Darts in his direction.

A plan.

...well, that was the thing, wasn't it? Though she'd always kept the potential of having to face Vergil again in the back of her head, all she'd seen BEFORE was a flurry of blade clashes. That those blade clashes were enough to keep up with Gourry was inhuman enough as it WAS...

Man.

She was regretting ever comparing this guy to Zangulus.

Even with the plethora of spells at her disposal, with her own limited power... it was hard to figure out what to do beyond trying to freeze him and running off with their tails between their legs.

Which, really. She didn't imagine would work out too well in the end, as he'd only be MORE pissed off then with MORE reason to kill them.

The first thing Lina needed...

Was more power.

"Gourry."

Desperate times called for desperate measures.

"I need to pick your brain."

Coredramon's second attack and instinctive angry yells in Matadormon's general vicinity were cut short by this comment from Lina.

"ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR BLEEDIN' MIND, WOMAN?!" the dragon roared.

Lina had to be careful how she worded this.

Very careful.

Digi-Soul and evolution were both entwined, at least, in the power of one's emotions. Now, Lina was someone who thought she was very well in control of her faculties. Despite what others may claim.

But, somehow, that one last little hurdle of Perfect evolution had eluded her.

"Emotions trigger evolution, and further power in Digi-Soul. Why haven't I been able to even touch it so far, while you had a pretty easy time of it?"

She clenched her teeth together, bracing herself.

One of two things could come from this.

She sincerely hoped it wasn't the one that ended in the next thing she threw at Vegril being Gourry.

The only thing that kept Gourry from reacting similarly to Coredramon was the fact that there was a VERY dangerous opponent in front of them.

"Are you sure this is the right time for that, Lina?!" he asked quickly.

Matadormon growled and hopped off of the Omega Sword, letting the Core Darts pass by harmlessly. "What, are you just trying to make me laugh myself to death? Is that your plan?" he asked mockingly.

Vergil, for his own part, regarded Lina and Gourry with what seemed like amusement. "I was wondering why he was the only one giving me a decent fight," he observed. "Go ahead. Answer her. I'll wait... for a moment."

Gourry gave Vergil a disbelieving look, but true to the swordsman's word, he was relaxing... to the point of being condescending. He took a seat atop the pillar he was standing on, held his sword across his lap, and was staring at both of them.

It was unnerving, to say the least.

"I... uh, I guess it's because I was protecting you?" he said dumbfoundedly, finally looking at Lina again.

Mystimon scowled and gave the tamers a curious glance. This fight was getting weird, but Matadormon had a point. The other perfect seemed to be completely on top of things, while he had already been injured and had yet to land a hit. "Sorry to disappoint you," he muttered. "But don't worry. I'll kick your ass in due time. I just need a bit of buildup."

Lina flexed one hand.

Well, it wasn't really a STUPID answer. Gourry was honest with his emotions. Of course he had an easy time of it. And if that was the reason he gave...

She was honest with hers, thought, right?

...right?

...

Dammit.

...

She took a breath, nodding. "Okay. Thanks, Gourry..."

She turned her eyes back up to Vergil. So, she needed two things.

First, was to evolve Coredramon. As it was, he wouldn't be able to do anything against Matadormon, and Mystimon seemed to be at a slight disadvantage.

Second...

Was, afterward, to keep Vergil still for at least thirty seconds, and not allow him to dodge something as quickly as she knew he could. IF that wasn't POSSIBLE... which she very well knew was likely...

Well, she'd need a new plan.

...

Yeah, real easy.

...

First thing's first, though.

"Gourry. I can do this, I'm just going to focus a moment. Can you buy me some time?"

Gourry's eyes stayed on Lina for a moment, before he finally gave Vergil another glance. "Of course I can," he said confidently. "We've seen each others's moves enough, we're not gonna be able to down one another easily. Just you leave it to me."

He smiled at her, then turned his focus back towards Vergil, raising his sword once again. "Just don't blast me in the process, okay?" he asked jokingly.
