"Kyon-kun?"

Mikuru's voice entered the scene, with her and ClearAgumon standing a short distance away, staring at what he and Neemon were doing.

Kyon had just grabbed Neemon when he heard Mikuru and froze, like a kid who was caught with their hand in the cookie jar. Or a deer in the headlights of an eighteen wheeler.

"Uhm... Hi, Miss Asahina," he said, well more like mumbled, as he forced a small smile and gestured for Mikuru to come sit. if she wants to of course.

Mikuru actually giggled a little, and walked over, sitting next to him. ClearAgumon just crossed his arms and plopped down where he already was.

Immediately, Mikuru spoke. "Um," she began, "I'm sorry for the things I said the night of the wedding..."

"You... You don't have to," the words sounded so weird when he said them, and he sighed. Neemon actually was being good and didn't say anything, yet.

So, you had an idea of what you wanted to say and now you can't remember it, Kyon mentally berated himself before speaking. "What I mean is... I overreacted?"

Mikuru shook her head. "Maybe you did, but... I shouldn't have said what I did. I knew all along what I was doing, and what was going on, and... I accepted it. I had no right to complain."

She took a deep breath, and continued. "The truth is... I put on as much a show for you as I do for Miss Suzumiya. I care about you, Kyon... as a friend, but my job... sometimes it forced me to trick you, or play the part of someone who was naive. And... I can't really stop doing that either."

Mikuru stared down at the ground. "I chose this life... to be this kind of person. I'm a liar and a manipulator, Kyon. You deserve a better friend than me."

Kyon didn't say anything once Mikuru was finished talking, at least not for a few minutes. He just looked over at her and then...

Chuckled.

"Miss Asahina... Pretty much everyone in the Brigade is that, me included," he said, as he moved a hand to lift her chin up so he can look her in the eyes. "And... I really wouldn't want any other people as friends."

Mikuru looked up, and... gaped for a moment.

"Yeah..." she said, finally. "I... I knew that. I just... didn't know you were okay with it..."

She sighed. "I have... one more confession. I really do like you, on some level, as more than a friend, but... I don't want to make that anything more. I want to be with someone who I can be honest with about who I am. And... besides. You clearly like someone more anyway..."

That last comment was accompanied by a small grin.

Kyon... Blushed a little and looked upwards.

"Well... Uhm." he stuttered and then... Neemon pulled on his hair, making Kyon yelp. And after a bit of grumbling at his partner he finally said what he had planned on saying. Kind of.

"I... Like you too, a lot, Miss Asahina but... A little bird once told me that anything like that between us wouldn't end well and, as much as I wanted a chance to try I guess well... I'm okay with things but, I still don't like that guy though."

Kyon didn't seem all to aware that he said that last part, and he did completely side step the 'you clearly like someone more' part as well.

Mikuru laughed a bit. "I don't expect you to like him. But... do me a favor and try to get along with him? I know I... don't really deserve a chance like that, and all..."

Kyon rubbed the back of his head, smiling for real this time. "Heh, I think I can try to do that. For you. And then all we have to worry about is what Haruhi'll do to him when she finds out."

Mikuru sighed. "For all I know, she'll probably try to turn it into some kind of dating sim, or... molest him. Probably both."

"Maybe... If she tries that I can try and keep her off his back?" Kyon asked. "I mean... I did promise to try my best to protect you from her, I guess I can... Extend it to include him."

Mikuru laughed. "That's fine," she said. "On one condition... you realize that I can take care of myself sometimes. Deal?"

And she offered him his hand, as if to shake on it.

Kyon sighed and put on his best put-upon face, although he wasn't serious and it's easy to tell.

"Well, you haven't gotten maimed multiple times since you showed up in this world so... I guess I can accept that."

And then he took the offer hand, and smiled.

Mikuru giggled, and shook his hand. "Alright then," she said, standing up.

She smiled at him. "You... want to get lunch in the cafeteria?"

Kyon made a small surprised sound at Mikuru's question, as he stood up as well.

"Uh, sure," he said and then offered Mikuru his arm, but then laughed and stopped himself. "Lunch with you would be nice, Mis--Mikuru."
