"JUST MAYBE."

Lina shot that out, and inhaled as much breath as her small chest could hold.

"That blade is the Sword of Light. It is a fragment of the Demon Lord Dark Star Dugradigdu, created from the thing itself when it fused with its opposite god Volfeed, in a parallel world from mine. Those gods are second only to the Lord of Nightmares, creator of the Four Worlds, of which MINE is one of. That sword, Gorun Nova, made its way to my world and was passed down through the generations by the Gabriev family. I encountered Gourry years ago, and was able to use that blade to destroy a fragment of OUR Demon Lord, Ruby Eye Shabrinigdo, which would have otherwise destroyed the world. We then later used Gorun Nova and its four sister weapons to destroy Dark Star, Volfeed, AND a nutcase, world-ending Mazoku/Dragon hybrid from annihilating everything that lived. AGAIN."

She pointed at Vergil, and panted.

"I can use that sword as a magical amplifier. And there are two extremely powerful Mazoku - very pieces of Shabrinido himself - I can use as a connection to Ruby Eye, including talismans that can call upon the remaining power of the four Demon Lords, AND my Digi-Soul, to summon up a Dragon Slave WAY the hell bigger than the one you blocked her a couple years back. And I can do more, if it comes down to it."

She exhaled. Or, she could at least TRY more. She wasn't sure of those spells would even start to fire up, here. Or if Yggdrasil would just strike her down for trying.

"And if all THAT fails... Gourry's going to do a lot more good to us if he has THAT, and we need every ounce of power we can get. Besides... you sure as hell don't need it, from what I've seen."

Vergil stood, silently, for several seconds. Even as all hell was loosed around them, he took an uncharacteristic five seconds to consider her words. "All useful information," Vergil replied, drawing the Gorun Nova's hilt from within his coat. "And all you require is this?"

He sneered at her. "And you would use it to summon that spell you attempted against me on a higher level," he said in disgust. "I don't know whether to scorn your plan, your weakness, or your short-sightedness."

"Oh, c'mon!" Lina snapped, not flinching. "Do you think holding a grudge has any sort of place here? We're all fighting the same thing, and frankly, I don't right now give a crap what you planned to do here, what you knew, or what you might do later. If I could go the rest of my life and not run across you again I'd be happy - but right now? Is not the time to screw around, or Chaosmon's going to kill us all. The Dragon Slave you saw before was only a fraction of what it's normally capable of. Beyond that..."

She took another breath. "I can possibly do more, and if we have that blade, I can make more certain I don't kill everyone else here in the process."

Herself surviving was, of course, not a promise.

She paused, slightly.

"I suppose I could go into the whole matter of it being apart of Gourry's family heritage, but you don't really strike me as the sentimental type."

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Dante raise a finger... and then he stopped whatever he as about to say, shrugged, and just scratched his chin.

"If your promise of power, of assured victory, relies upon a trinket? Then you have nothing to offer," Vergil told her simply. "Gourry stood up to me with far less than this. Successfully. He has more of a chance against that being than you do, even if I gave you the blade. You have not adapted to this world. You have languished. Were it not for me... This blade would be turned AGAINST you, and you would be in a worse position than you are now."

He turned away from her and glanced to Dante briefly, before looking up at Chaosmon. "I have no grudge against you now. Chaosmon will not be felled by a single spell, a single god, or even a single son of Sparda," he said coldly. "Instead of fighting, you waste time, your guardian's protection, and your partner's evolution. Go and fight with what you have, and cease being your team's weak link."

Lina just snorted.

"You pompous dick. I've heard worse."

She waved a hand.

"Anything I have planned isn't reliant on that damned sword. This isn't Dark Star. It doesn't NEED to to be used to kill this thing, but it'd sure as hell help, and you just happened to be the closest person with anything comparable. And YOU aren't using it, despite the fact you were right in its face. You've got your arrogant head so far up your ass you can't even see what you're dealing with, or why and how to use that thing against Chaosmon the RIGHT way. Or maybe you would know, if you didn't make such a concentrated attempting at pissing off everyone who knows how to tap into that blade's true power, because just flashing around a glowing sword is only half of it."

She pointed a hand out to him.

"You haven't done a hell of a lot more than give us MORE things trying to kill us, so don't you sit there lecturing me on how I'm spending my time. Until we figure out a means of breaking through his defenses, what we SHOULD be doing is pooling our resources and THINKING. Attacking it half-assed, just flinging whatever at it, and wasting energy is stupid, and that could at least be part of a plan. But even NOW, all you care about is lording your egotistical, supposed superiority over people. You're worse than freaking Xellos."

"The littlest dog barks the loudest," Vergil said. "And with your chest, that applies doubly. Come, Dante. We've wasted enough time."

Vergil vanished then, returning to the fight.

Dante sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"Yeaaaaaaah, Vergil's not exactly the best with the whole 'rational negotiation' thing," Dante muttered, before tipping his gun towards Lina in a slight salute before blinking after his brother, Beelzebumon coming after them slightly more slowly.

"No kidding," Lina muttered, crossing her arms.

All told, though, that went about as well as expected. Still, Vergil was close, and it was at least worth a shot.

"Well. Time for Plan B."
