My Top 5 Sorkinverse Characters

Aug 30, 2010 14:33

As I've mentioned on this journal before, I have been participating in Phase II of sorkinverse over the course of the summer. It's a fantastic community and has been a really fun way to connect with other people on LiveJournal. It has also given me a great outlet to slowly ease myself into the world of graphic manipulation, which has probably been the most ( Read more... )

Oh, man. That character in Charlie Wilson's War is just amazing. I was blown away by that movie. It is so absolutely fantastic. Great choice.

If I had the time, I'd go to battle with you about the later Wing seasons and how they don't force characters "out of character" and how they are, in at least one way, better than the earlier seasons. I have such hardcore love for all of the seasons, the later ones included, and I think they did just about everything right. Just sayin', I suppose. Makes me really sad when those seasons are hated on so much for reasons I just don't buy.

Also, making a list of favorites is so hard, for sure. I have a couple that are always on my list of favorites, but my list is fluid as well. Much of it seems to change depending on my mood. =)

I don't mean to imply that I hate the later seasons; far from it! Aside from the string of episodes with Bartlet in China, they are some of my favorites to re-watch. I think for me the issues I have with Seasons 5 & 6 are the same issues I had with Season 6 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. They're great seasons and have a lot of good drama, but they are just SOO painful to watch at times! Your heart really bleeds for the characters ( ... )

Your heart really bleeds for the characters. That's exactly one of the things I adore about those seasons. Just adore.

And I...really disagree about CJ and Leo. I could get into it another time if you want, but I very much disagree. (Perhaps not with the "hard to watch", but I think that was part of the point and so was successful, but not out-of-character.) For now, I'll say that I think some of the things you mentioned added so much depth that was never there before and that they became so much more dimensional, changed in ways that were logical and made sense for them, were absolutely realistic. I can't really judge your like or dislike as a result of those changes, but I disagree with the idea that the changes were out of character.

Sorry to be so verbose; I just really love discussion! And I hate to imply that I no longer like Leo and CJ because of the issues I listed; it's just that those tiny quibbles are what kept them from being included on a list that is already too short to begin with.

I think what it boils down to is I'm increadibly loyal to certain characters, likely to my detriment. CJ was out of line with Donna during the lockdown; I have a bit of an issue. Leo was mean to Josh during the Carrick thing; I have a bit of an issue. I recognize that it is stupid and petty, so I suppose that's half the battle ;)

I wasn't really making judgments about you, and you're perfectly entitled to dislike anyone you want (I know you say you don't dislike them, but if you did, you have a right to feel that way). I suppose I just get defensive about those later years and rush to their defense. I was absolutely baffled when I first discovered that people didn't like those seasons, so I usually rush in to explain why they're awesome.

I think, like everyone, CJ has moments of frustration that boil over into crossing a bit of a line. She also has very particular ideas about what women should do, how they should act, how they should be taken seriously, and I think she was projecting onto Donna there, in some ways. So while I think she was out of line with Donna in that scene--and I really feel for Donna and how uncomfortable she seemed about the whole thing--it was both not unlike CJ to say something like that, especially if she was feeling some tension herself, and was something Donna should have heard from someone long before that moment. So I think ( ... )

Oh, I'm more than aware you weren't making judgements about me. It's just so tricky to convey tone on the internet sometimes! I'm completely of the belief that everyone is entitled to their opinions; I'm just fascinated with discussing things with people who may not agree with me. Hearing other people's arguments helps frame things in a new light and I LOVE that.

For example, I really love the way you've framed the CJ and Carrick situations, respectively. I agree with a lot of the points you raised and now I really want to watch the episodes again.

I'm fighting myself to keep from writing an essay here; I know I could if pressed. I guess it's the English major in me leaping at the chance to do some good old fashioned character analysis :)

You're talking to someone with a B.A. in English...who spends a considerable amount of time watching theatre. Character analysis isn't something I think about doing anymore; it happens on--well, a pretty constant basis. ;) So I understand.

I also have a B.A. in English/Drama and spend as much time at the theatre as I possibly can. No wonder this comment thread got a bit out of hand ;)
