Last weekend Melissa and I hiked in Big Basin - we actually chose, of our own volition, to hike up around 350 feet, then down about 1100, then back up the way we came. So overall it was around 1500' elevation change, but hiking down first, which I'm not a big fan of, to say the least. But luckily the weather was perfect! Blue sky with a few clouds, enough to make it a nice cool day, and Big Basin is filled with redwood groves and creeks, so it was a very pretty hike which ended up being about 8.5 miles total.
Next weekend we're going to take it easy and do San Bruno Mountain, which is a max of 8 miles if we do the whole East Ridge out-and-back, and maybe 1000 elevation change? Which is not hard at all. Funny how your perspective changes - my Dad was just asking me if I was going to be up for the 9.5-mile Dewey Point hike we will be doing in Yosemite and I said, "Oh please, I've been hiking around 11 - 12 miles most weekends, that's a snap!" :)
