BREAKAWAY
PART III

It was near two o’clock when she finally made it to Silver City. It took a couple of wrong turns before she finally found Jack’s little bar. Sequestered away, only the local color or people who already knew about the joint would be able to find it. Holly parked the Mustang on the street, turning off the engine and feeling the summer heat beat down on her bare shoulders. She’d deal with the sunburn in exchange for the moments of coolness that a tank top provided.

Sighing, she stepped out of the car and shut the door behind her. She always liked Silver City. It always made her feel like she was stepping into a part of history - the Old West. She laughed to herself. Maybe the heat was starting to get to her.

Holly shifted her attention and headed directly for the entrance to the bar. Her hand grasped the handle and pulled the door open. She stepped inside, feeling slightly cooler due to the shade the interior of the building provided.

“We’re closed.”

Removing beer bottles from a box, Jack had not even looked up from his work to admonish the intruder. Holly’s brow rose.

“Not even for a raging alcoholic like me?”

Jack looked up quickly, eyes widening in surprise at his cousin’s sudden arrival. “What the hell are you doing here?” Jack grinned, stepping out from behind the bar.

Holly smiled brightly, letting the screen door close behind her.

“Someone told me I was stuck in a rut, had to get away for a while,” she said evasively.

“Smart someone,” he joked, before pulling her into a hug. “What made you come here, though?”

“Haven’t been here in a while,” Holly replied as she stepped out of the hug. “Plus, I figure I could give you a hand with things…take care of Izzie, help out around the bar…at least until I figure out my next move?”

“Sure, whatever you want,” Jack said, he went back around to the other side of the bar, going back to loading a cooler up with bottles of beer. “You got here pretty quick seeing I just talked to you yesterday…”

“It was pretty spur of the moment. Wrote my resignation letter, packed a bag, and was on the road by 4:30. Stopped at a motel to sleep and spent the rest of the morning driving.”

Jack shook his head with a laugh. “Wow. Did you tell anyone you were coming?”

“Dad,” Holly supplied, taking a seat on one of the bar stools. She dropped her set of keys and wallet onto the counter. “I kind of needed his help…”

“He gave you the ‘Stang, didn’t he?” Jack said knowingly, smirking.

“You knew?”

“Of course,” he shrugged. “He called me five seconds after you left the garage.” Jack was silent for a few moments before speaking up. “How do you think your Mom and Andrew are going to take it?”

“Honestly? I have no idea.”

“And Connor?”

Holly’s mouth opened to respond, but no sound came out. She grimaced slightly with a small shrug.

Jack laughed. “You do know how to make an exit.”

“Oh, shut up.”

Just then, the back door opened. Tiny feet in sandals could be heard pattering on the wood floors, followed by the heavy thud of work boots.

“Jack! What’s with the chick car out front?” David’s gruff tone echoed through the back room.

“It belongs to a girl,” Jack responded. “Though, she might hurt you if you call her a chick.”

David looked out of the back, confusion etched on his features. Seeing Holly, his expression softened.

“When did trouble get into town?” He asked with a teasing grin on his face.

“This afternoon,” Holly answered with a laugh.

It was at that moment when a toddler came running around the corner of the bar. Long, curly brown hair inherited from her mother and big brown eyes, Isabella was a curious little individual. For being raised by two oftentimes bickering brothers, she was not bad off.

“Holly!” Isabella cried in excitement. It was only a few weeks before that Izzie had been visiting at Sam and Sarah’s, Holly oftentimes babysitting when they had to work.

“Hey, Izzie!” Holly leaned down and picked the girl up, resting her on her lap.

“How long are you staying for?” David asked curiously, going to stand beside Jack.

“A little while.”

“You going to help?” Jack interrupted, shooting an annoyed look at his brother as he heaved another box of bottles onto the cooler.

“I’m having a conversation with my baby cousin. Can it wait?” David stated pointedly, motioning to Holly.

“Lazy son of a…”

“Hey, kid in the room, Jackie-boy, watch your mouth. She’s like a sponge.”

“That why she swore at the guy who cut me off on the way to the store last week?”

“Probably.”

Holly laughed, looking between the two. “You guys are ridiculous.”
