I have just finished my first day at the
Romance Writers of Australia Annual Convention, held in Sydney again this year. I went once before, when it was in Sydney 3 years ago.
It is a lot of fun, incredibly instructive, and I think would be of value to anyone who writes, not just those interested in romance. The seminars mostly focus on narrative, plot, structure, characterisation, and archtypes. Today my two electives were actually a 2 part seminar on the genres etc.
The two plenary sessions were the keynote speech by
Jennifer Crusie, who is fantastically funny and an awesome speaker; and a second session at the end by Jennifer Crusie and Anne Stuart (who apparently writes dark romances with twisted and sometimes violent sex scenes) on writing scenes with sex and/or violence.
Tomorrow my electives are on Point of View and The Alpha Male! Plus the two plenary sessions, can't remember the topics off hand.
Plus I got a 'showbag' with about 14 novels, including lines that I don't usually read but I'm willing to try.
I also got a list of publishers that are looking for fantasy / sci fi, paranormal, erotica and a few others that people on my flist might be interested in. When I get a chance I'll transcribe the list and include links to the respective publishing houses for those who want to consider submissions.
sirtwist and I also went to the Venetian Carnevale Masquerade last night, sponsored by Harlequin, which was a lot of fun. Very tiring to do straight after work though.
Just had dinner with
lotusvine who was supposed to be at the RWA convention with me but was a lazy bum and didn't try to register until last week (and it was booked out). She has gone to her Cam game, and
sirtwist is at a Black Sabbith concert with
yeah_hup so I'll have an early night and do a bit of reading I think.
