I just had to say something about Mercury retrograde, didn't I?

I'm currently working off my partner's Dell mini-9, because my laptop is having issues. Specifically, it appears there's some malfunction of the sensor that shuts the computer off when you close the top, and then (and this is the important part) allows it to be turned back on when the top is opened.

From what my partner has been able to read online, it appears the sensor is triggered by the presence, and absence, or a magnet that is located in the lid. When the lid is closed, the proximity of the magnet to the sensor shuts things down. When the lid is opened, the magnet is removed, and things are "freed up" to do start up. Some of the postings have indicated this can be resolved by opening the laptop to get to the touch pad assembly (which is where the sensor is located), and then disabling the sensor.

I know I have quite a few geeky folks on my friends list -- or within one or two degrees of separation from my friends list, anyway. Would any of you have any words of wisdom to share with me, before I turn my partner loose on my laptop with a small screwdriver?

Oh, and my need is fairly urgent. I was planning to spend today finalizing the details so we could start announcing our next Primal party (scheduled on Saturday, Sept 19th). And, of course, all the stuff I need is on that laptop.

sigh
