It's been a long time since I have read it, but I can still feel the growing horror as the main character described her changing body and the way in which she is treated by opportunists. I hope this is not too tame for this community.
I'd be interested to hear from anyone who has read it in translation and in the original - whether the language changes anything significant about the story or the atmosphere.
