Adoption
In the center of the field
a wobbly shadow nudges
a cow with an over-swollen belly
that her legs jut over.
The calf's mouth opens,
her head tilts back,
but I can't hear her lowing

Rounded up and loaded onto the trailer,
into their wire cage.
Now their mothers moan,
call,
wail;
And I cannot sleep
