“You could have died!” She’s screaming at him through her tears, clutching the lapels of his now coal black coat. “Wilbur was screaming his head off, the chandelier in the dining room shattered, and I could feel the vibrations from your lab!”
“I’m fine, Frannie, really!”
“This time! This time you’re fine!” She holds up what’s left of the time machine, a single nut. “If you had been sitting in that thing…”
“But I wasn’t!” Cornelius pulls her to him, wrapping his arms around her as she clings to his sooty clothes.
“You could have died, Cornelius.” There’s a sob, and she looks at him, face sooty and he smiles back at her before wiping her tears away gently. “Why a time machine?”
“Because I have to.”
“We’ve got a family now, you can’t just go and blow yourself up! You haven’t done anything this risky since the transport tubes when I was pregnant!”
“Those worked.”
“Eventually! I know you’d never have anyone else but you test out your more extreme inventions, but isn’t there a way you could test them without endangering yourself?”
“I’ll invent something, Frannie. I promise you.” He kisses her and she smiles softly up at him.
It’s a dark day at the Robinson house, but it’s brighter than it could have been.
