Normally, I wouldn't approach this with a ten foot pole, but...

I am confused. The BBC have a television programme called the One Show - if you haven't watched it, they do various human interest stories in short bitesize (and sometimes ridiculously easy to understand) pieces, and occasionally touch on articles that are in the news. At the moment they have an interesting report about ants, which I'm idly ( Read more... )

I think you're right. They went about getting their "statistics" in entirely the wrong manner. If I'm approached by anyone with a clipboard I immediately assume that they will want my name and address and will thereafter harass by post for the rest of my natural days. Not to mention the fact that a clipboard saying "Are You Embarrasssed To Talk About God?" poses such a loaded question faith-wise that many people would give said clipboard a wide berth, if not take instant offense. I know I would be in the latter number.
Now I didn't see the program, but it also strikes me that possiby the show failed to make the distinction between the religion/cultural tradition in which a given person may have been raised, and their current personal faith.
For example, I was raised Catholic, but do not now consider myself as such, though I still have respect for much of what I was taught within that tradition. Which makes for an even more difficult question to answer, especially to a stranger with a clipboard.
It's not just a mis-judged conclusion that the show came to; it's downright crappy journalism.

I suppose that the fact that the woman was being tailed by a camera crew would give a hint that's she's not your average person-with-a-clipboard. However, I should imagine that the clipboard will still put people off.

I don't think you can call the one show journalism anyway - it's puff pieces and local interest stories. Towns with weird names and investigating to see what animals can be found in people's back gardens. Vaguely interesting, and occasionally insightful but generally just watch one minute, forget it the next programming. Maybe I'm expecting too much from a show like that.
