Or... not. From the first day that the light blew, Daddy has said that it might be possible to cut the cord above the bit which is melted, and that might solve the problem. This afternoon, since we had nothing better to do, and we really couldn't make it any worse (what exactly is worse in this situation than no light?), I got up on the piano stool (the ladders are all upstairs or outside) and clipped the cable, and would you believe it? It worked!

We have light!

I still have to do the shopping-in-the-sales-rush thing on Wednesday, but we have light to see our food by, and light to watch TV by (we were worrying about our eyes!).
