Hello I know this is old but uhh I stumbled upon this when looking up info about Yuki having PTSD
LOL That's pretty amusing, but it makes sense because I used to look up fan explanations myself before I wrote this to see if there were any intelligent discussions going on or even a some fanfictions that attempted a more realistic prototypical of the manga, or any part of it. I found one good one on FF.net that was post-rape Shu. with Yuki actually comforting him in strange way, but it made sense due to the circumstances in the manga, as in the author took Shu.'s attempt to seduce Yuki seriously, and had Yuki take of all that school girl crap he was wearing, clean him up, and eventually Shu. kept begging for sex to make Yuki prove he was still attracted to him even though he was raped, and Yuki, unhappily does so, but is pretty disturbed by it, since Shu. is bleeding still and he's gentle, but never cums, and after Shu. goes to sleep he barfs in the bathroom and feels disgusted.
Er anyway, the funny thing is, I'm actually a fan of the series too, although I cannot explain WHY exactly. I guess I like the potential, and one of the things I've always wanted to see or do is have a long fanfiction that is basically a realistic rewrite of the entire Gravitation plot taken seriously, either through one author or through a collaboration of fans. That would be heaven for me.
And Gravitation was my first yaoi manga as well, along with Yami no Matsuei (which takes rape a little bit more seriously but ignores it after a few episodes.) For series that handle rape well, I would say Banana Fish is fantastic in that respect and I think Wild Adapter is going in that direction, but it is nice to know that there are in fact some long running BL series that do take it very seriously develop the couple and recovery
As fro Shu.(sorry I always call him that for short now) I can still not pin him down. I could before he met Yuki because his goals were simple and normal, become a preforming artists. Then he meets Yuki and just goes into a mixture of Mania and Eros love for Eiri bordering on obsession, based solely at first about being enraged by Yuki insulting his lyrics. Up to this point, I can handle it alright, but when the relationship goes on and on, particularly once the New York Arc starts it all stops making sense, which is why I think the manga is better. If they had cut out the random dog suit humor crap, and just had Shu. hug Yuki after he tells Shu about the rape in that old apartment, or when they both look at the photo, Shu. instead of bashing his head againist a vending mechine for no apparent reason went, "I understand, Yuki, to an extent. What those men did to me was similar to what happened to you. I'm sorry." And then maybe squeezes Yuki's hand or something. Just normal fucking responses.
A for Yuki at least you can explain his assholeness because he is afraid of being betrayed again, and therefore keeps people at a distance, which you could argue that is why he is rude to Shu. a lot of time to get him to leave, so he doesn't fall in love with the boy and put himself emotional out there to get hurt they way he did with Kitazwa. And then there are the medications for a supposed PSD/mental disorder of some kind that could very well be messing with his mood.
But mostly, I believe Murakani is just highly uneducated in psychology and did not do a damn bit of research before drawing the manga. Maybe she never thought it would be popular. Either way, that's no excuse IMO. I've studied male rape, and rape trauma syndrome, because of a few research papers I've written about it. And Japan is one of those cultures who sadly does not keep a good recording of male rapes, nor do many men actually report it when it happens, so she may had very few sources to look at in her own language. BUT, as I stated in yet another rant, about gravitation, that still isn't an excuse because the differences in reactions between men and women after being raped are not very different, so all she had to do was imagine herself in her characters' place and draw on the emotion she felt from imagining someone selling her body for 10 dollars or getting gang-raped in a tram-station. But, well I guess she is just hopeless when it comes to character building and story telling. meh. And, yeah, I agree, she has no idea what she is doing. I think she gets an idea for a start of a manga, but doesn't plan out major events leading to plot/character development nor does she think of an ending before she starts drawing, and then just fumbles along to keep the fans 'happy.' Her notes after each chapter/section in the managa highly suggest this, as she always says something like "well I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do with this chapter, but I figured out something, btw, Eiri has new hair style. whoops."
For the same reason you RP it I think I want to write an epic fanfiction one day of a realistic gravitation. Probably won't ever happen though. Nice thought to entertain, however.
Its been so long since I had an active LJ friend. I warn you I do update my journal a lot but its like everyday journal-like entries for my own record XD if you have a tumblr I wouldn't mind following you on that either, most of my fandom stuff is on there. My username is hitomi-kanzaki and my Yuki blog is eiri-san. :)
That would be very interesting, a fanfiction collab. I do like Shuichi being cute and hyper, but as you mentioned, I wish he had taken important issues more seriously. He seems so much more realistic in the beginning of the manga..its really a shame. But yeah I don't own the Gravi dvds, only the first dvd..the rest of my dvds should be coming in soon, I bought them used for a few bucks each. I don't remember too much after the first 6 eps.
I've heard of Bananafish. I'm not really into Boy's Love manga, Gravi is just an exception and I did enjoy the first few eps I've seen of Yami no Matsui. I suppose if its got a mature, well-told love story or drama I'm game. I'm currently more of a fan of mature relationships like the ones in Nana.
I think, maybe, Shu was attracted to Yuki's mysteriousness and blunt honesty when he critiqued his lyrics. He had blond hair and looked like a foreigner, which made him even more 'mysterious' and alluring. Hell, I should know.. LOL I still get happy when I see that scene though but I think its more for nostalgia.
For what you said about Yuki..honestly, I thought that was WHY he was very cold to begin with..one of the results of ptsd is not being able to express your emotions right anymore, at least from one article I read. He didn't want to get betrayed or kill anyone. But no apparently that's not so. In Gravitation Ex he's back to being a dick because he caaaan~ me and my shu just pretend it doesn't exist =_=
You're right, its very clear Murakami didn't do research. She had a great story that can go with the common theme of getting over the past, moving forward and not being afraid of falling in love again. But yeah..we know that's not how she views the series. XD
