Beyond Description

I was digging through some of my (not so) old records last night, seperating the ones I wanted to keep from the ones I was going to rid of. I found some of the Regan Era HC bootlegs 7"s that had some cool records from bands like Koro, Genetic Control, and Neon Christ. But I also found my Beyond Description records. I have a 7" and two LPs by them.

They are a pretty cool band, and their music reminds me a little bit of Bastard and some other Japanese bands from the late 80s like Nightmare and Deathside, but with their own touch and they deviated away from this formula and got more original and better as the years have gone along. They pay attention to detail and quality like most of their Japanese contemporaries do but are a bit more political lyrically then the rest, even the crust bands there. Japanese crust bands are weird and are more interested in the image of the music and pretty much apolitical in nature despite their lyrics. Thats whole other topic though.

This EP came out in 1995 on their own label Forest Records, I think its their third release. I read a review saying the music on this release was a bit generic but I disagree with that. While the band draws heavily from "Controlled in the Frame" era Bastard as influence on this record, they play their music faster and oddly have American style breakdowns instead of guitar leads. Actually their use of guitar leads in their music is light in comparison to other Japanese bands and thats one of the things I like about them. Alot of Japanese bands rely to heavily on them for my tastes, the over use of it gives the music a bad hair metal feel to me.

This is their first LP the came out in 2002 on Farewell Records. It also came out on CD earlier on Forest Records. I don't know when that was released though but this album was recorded in 2000 so probably some time in 2001. The music is more polished up and has better production and a little more straight forward and faster than the previous 7" with bit of a crossover tinge to it. I thought they changed vocalists on this album from the 7" since intense, angry and hoarse. Its still the same guy. This album is awesome.

This is their most recent album that came out in 2004. They started adding more of a crossover/thrash influence to the music like Accused or Corrosion of Conformity circa 85. Its heavier and more intense yet still great hardcore punk. And its a great blend of thrash metal and punk that bands fail at combining more often than not.

Here's an MP3 from the album.
