I'm just thinking about rap music... And I'm wondering... WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?
Just - look back, if you will, about ten years. About the time when myself and my peers were just getting into buying our CDs, or, well, our Cassettes, since CDs were newish stuff then!
Anyways - ten years back. 1995... Let's see. Coolio just released Gangsta's Paradise... 2pac was about to be shot, but create a couple of great songs beforehand... Generally rap music was pretty damn enjoyable, as well as a lot of the RnB. Run DMC were releasing songs here and there, including a collaboration with Aerosmith, and in a few years would bring us their rap/house hybrid "It's Like That", and Cypress Hill were cracking us all up with their drugs-inspired whacko stuff.
Drift back a little further than that and look at some of the energetic stuff like, say, The Sugarhill Gang, who had so much skill they could probably improvise rap all night if they wanted to.
I'm not exactly sure where it happened, but somewhere along the line rap music had a stroke. Because now it has no feeling in it's right hand side. Other than the brilliant Eminem, and perhaps like one or two Black Eyed Peas songs, I haven't heard any rap song I'd listen to more than once in such a long time.
50 Cent? Kiss my ass.
The problem is - there's so much of it! Where's it all coming from!? It's flooding in so fast, and it's like opening a damn which has nothing on the other side but shit, and watching it all flow in and drown everybody. Perhaps there's a few golden gems amongst the shit, but good luck finding it.
