I've been on call for the last week, but today I actually got to stay home and play in the shop rather than being called in at the last minute, so I grabbed one of the maple tree rounds I got thanks to craigs list last fall, found and interesting bit, and set out to try my hand at a "natural" edge bowl, one where a bit of bark is left on the edge and the imperfections are left on the surface.
After getting it into rough shape, I grabbed a dental pick that I got from my very cool dentist and started pulling loose bits out of a gnarled section. To my surprise, at the end of one of the little tunnels I found a giant white grub. I think it was a baby mothra, or maybe I was just a tiny bit freaked out;)
I got it out, but it was a bit unsettling. It was still alive, and I had to wonder what would have happened if I had just run into it while turning the piece with the lathe running at full speed. Yuck! I may have to be a bit more careful with the inspection next time. I wonder if I made it dizzy?
