Darc is surprised to see someone else here, in this strange land of wisps of odd magic. Well, in fact, not so much at finding someone else but rather at seeing a human girl balancing precariously at the edge of a cliff. Just what was she thinking? He frowns. Decidedly, he was never going to understand humans. He walks slowly to her, trying not to startle her into a fall. He didn't feel like being responsible for this girl's useless death.

"Hey..."

The voice of a stranger doesn't startle her, but only because she isn't the sort to startle. It's more that she is one to focus suddenly. The new voice makes her lift her chin, pausing midstep to turn almost on point toward the stranger. Whatever human elegance there is to her movements, the look on her face is strangely vacant. Perhaps she is listening to music very far away within herself as she moves ( ... )

Good - she didn't seem scared. But then again...her face didn't speak of many emotions. He'd heard of people that had gone bad in the head after some trauma or something - was the girl suffering from such a thing? Either way he's definitely not used to this kind of thing. What did it matter to him if the girl fell to her death? It wouldn't be anyone's doing but her own. But at the same time...he can't just walk away. Curse his human lineage. He eyes the strange looking weapon beside her but doesn't unsheathe his sword. He'd lead her away from the cliff first and then they'd deal with anything else. He sighs - patience wasn't his forte - and reaches out with his right human hand ( ... )

There was a brief flicker--something like annoyance flashed across her face with a displeased tug of the lips and sideways roll of the eyes. Then River's features settled into a look of petulance that a person might have expected from a child of seven rather than a young woman of 17. No one she knew was here, but the lectures didn't seem to stop because of it. Echoes twisted the young man-creature's voice, as if she could pick out the precise tones which linked his concerned words to the vocal quality of her brother or the captain set on edge by her actions. River, that's too high. River, that's dangerous.

River, put the gun down. It isn't for you.

"...I like the wind." Despite the pulled face and contrary tone, she shifted one foot down onto more solid ground, away from the edge of the column. Almost accusatory, she added with a slightly hollow tone, "You should know that."

After what seemed like hours -- days -- of pressing random spaces on the surface of the crystal, Tifa was starting to believe she was getting the hang it. At least where travel was concerned. It was all a matter of remembering the sequences and which one belonged to which world. And which gateways were available. There was no telling how many there were, but thus far, there had been no serious problems to be concerned about.

That is, until she arrived here.

For the briefest of moments, it was like she was back home. Back where she belonged, so to speak. Because the Northern Crater was certainly further than she intended to end up and it would be a long walk back to Edge. But then realization and revelation settled in. It was the same but different; familiar yet completely new, which all culminated into one massive indication that this was not the world that she knew. Far from it. "Nope, not here either..."

Thunk thunk thunk--

The world (or at least, this portion of it, at any rate) was feeling significantly less big and terrifying now. There was sneaking to be done around the monotone creatures (the idea had planted itself in her head long before now and refused to let go stubbornly), but she'd seen little evidence of them in this sector. And really, River mused, if things that looked like fairy tale monsters were going to keep proving themselves to be nothing more than mild opposition to her free movement, what was the point of keeping herself hidden until things became not safe again?

Th-thunk thunk--The tip of the axe-sword dragged on the ground behind her, a dull metal noise as she slid along in her line again. Her actual footsteps were silent even in their carelessness, weight resting on the balls of her feet rather than her heels as she wandered forward. The sliver of a girl was gliding, and the khopesh was clanking along behind her like a deadly version of a child's toy. Her attention was skyward, a co-captain stranded on the ( ... )

Had it not been for the metal scraping along the ground, Tifa was almost certain that she would not have been able to hear the girl's approach. The Plant's Core, at least the one she was fairly familiar with, had been a step short of being a complete void. No sound, extremely little light save for one massive source, as well a singular and limited area to stand on. And the rest was open space filled with nothingness. Anyone would have been able to get the better of her, the young woman suspected. Which only caused her to be more alert of what was going on around them ( ... )

For a moment, the girl simply stared. At any rate, she seemed to be simply staring. Her eyes might not have been wholly in focus, but her energy and attention were clearly zeroed in on the stranger before her. River was still, completely inside of herself, listening to echoes and skimming through the bright flashes of information which illuminated her mind the way whatever it was kept illuminating the sky.

The words that bubbled in her throat were not happy words. Sickness, loneliness, fear, strife, angels, sin, longing, fractures--

It's like a flash and suddenly River knows that there is something to this woman, that she will understand. It isn't the tremor that runs through her when They (and even just the momentary flicker of the thought spirals part of her mind into darkness and pairs and hands and blue hands and never look at the sun and two and two--) get too close; the knowledge that the stranger has isn't threatening. It simply exists ( ... )

Terra had looked around for the exhausted-sounding, broken girl that she had spoken to over the communication crystal. Unfortunately, her timing was off. Having failed to find her in Order's Sanctuary, she checked the surrounding realms, avoiding mannequins when she could and fighting them when she couldn't. Fortunately, they were no threat.

The search doubled as a general scouting mission. Terra needed to know what had changed, what hadn't, and who else might have returned on Chaos' side. She met with little luck in the latter area, but knew better than to let her guard down.

By the time she had reached the Planet's Core, Terra wondered if she shouldn't turn around and head back. Perhaps the girl had done the same a long time ago. And had she even asked her name? Realizing that she hadn't, Terra felt foolish. She leaped from one small floating island to the next, attempting to reach the largest one and get a good view from there.

The day has been too long. Unbearably long, if it even still is a day at all. Maybe it's been weeks since she left Kain at the Sanctuary. And maybe it's been minutes and when she breaks free of sleep she'll still be curled up in the chair she calls hers while Mal runs his fingers over the panel before him lovingly and doesn't mind that she sees. Whichever way she cuts it, she's tired and wants everything to stop ( ... )

Finally, timing was in her favor. Terra caught sight of the young woman ahead, just in time to see her collapse. Ignoring the fact that she didn't know her, that she could very well be on the other side, Terra raced over with all due speed. She completed her jumps as though the laws of gravity had even less hold over her in this place than usual.

Upon touching down, Terra darted toward the girl and dropped down to her knees beside her prone form. Of course, she immediately looked her over for any wounds. Her gentle voice sunk in volume, though she hoped it was enough to rouse the girl. "Hey...can you hear me?"

Wherever River's mind had briefly flickered off to, it came back with a rush like a gasp of air filling her lungs. The heavy thoughts scattered off in a thousand directions and her eyes snapped back into focus. Tension zapped through each of her limbs, fingers tightening as her body pulled itself into a hyper-stillness of coiled muscles. Adrenaline briefly flooded her system, a pounding in her chest as her body kicked into a split second of overdrive because someone was here, almost on top of her, too close, too ( ... )
