A true Defender must strive to be a good role model. That means that it's important to be recognized for his good deeds. But he shouldn't go out of his way to toot his own horn. If our actions here are never noticed by the rest of the cosmos, we'll have to accept that, and just make use of the experience we've gained here in our own lives back home.

There's a fine line between accepting humility and accepting a cover-up. How can we be sure that we'll even remember anything if we're allowed to go home, once they have no further use for us? They've already tampered with our minds when they brought us here. Who knows what other alterations they might choose to make... or have already made?

If they're tampering with our minds, why not simply remove all fear and doubt? I know a thing or two about mind control. It's not difficult to turn a human into an unthinking robot without altering their physical abilities.

Hrrmm... you bring up a good point. Why wouldn't they do that? What's stopping them? Surely that would suit their agenda better.

[And somehow, Solidus becomes even more paranoid]

[This was something Saleh was all too familiar with, with how the legend of the Sacred Stones had been distorted over time.]

This war is…far different I've ever seen before. Warriors from different worlds band together for a common goal. However, each person will have a unique experience to remember regarding this war, and thus each person will bring a different truth to their respective world.

So, word-of-mouth, then. Our battle will become a legend, to be passed on in tales by whoever survives, and then again by their audiences. That sort of history tends to make for good stories, at least. But I would prefer something more accurate, more permanent. Something that can't be exaggerated and twisted as time goes by.

And who would make such a record? Perhaps each of us can write down a record of what happened here, but as I said, each person's tale will be unique.

If you know the "more accurate" truth, then who better than you would preserve the memory that you so desire?

No... I'm all too aware that I only know a fraction of what's going on here. Right now, my story is just a fragment of the entire tapestry.

Besides, I'm not expecting much of an audience when I make it out of this...

If there was anyone here I trusted to be impartial, I would make them our chronicler, to collect and preserve everyone's tales for future generations. But there's no one here I can entrust with our history.

[There's a brief stretch of silence before she replies.]

...The survivors themselves will be left behind, for one. They'll have their memories, as will the people we've left behind back home.

[A sound of movement] Not all fights are written down. Sometimes it doesn't matter; sometimes it's better that way.

Is that what you think?

Secrets have a way of haunting people, Jill. And so does forgotten history. One way or another, the truth is always wanting to come out.

I think the truth comes out if and when it needs to--when there's a cause, or something to be learned. This... it still feels like an elaborate game. I wonder if there's really anything to be learned, let alone worth recording for any who might come after us. Assuming there is an "after us," anyway.

You don't sound very hopeful about our situation.
