Witching Hour I would have to say, in my professional expertise, is thee Displacer album. I mean don’t get me wrong Cage Lullaby was a great album, and Arroyo and Moon_Phase absolutely worth listening to. But I think with the Witching Hour, Displacer has finally been able to successfully merge the cold atmospheric melodies with a warm low end, almost trip-hop, organic depth.

Gone is the only real previous criticism I had where it sounded like in production the bass and sort of groove had been massively reduced, to make the whole thing sound far too ambient.: Almost like the atmospheric melody sort of overtook the whole thing, but now, now oh boy, the bass takes its place right out in the front, in the open pressed forward for all to see and love. And the cheesy sounding movie samples don’t let you forget a sort of strange gothic morbidity to the whole affair. There is a definite reduction in the glitch IDM elements that, that shows a real progression in the work, as he swerves largely into more of a Techno Animal type electronic vein.

Yes indeed sir I think this may be the album to bring Displacer to a much larger audience. Jeez does this ever make me think of Techno Animal, but not at all in a bad or derivative way, but I think more in an I really miss that band type of way. Well screw it who needs them now. This is a perfect substitute. I really appreciate that the songs aren’t overly long as I have a thing with electronic music, where I tend to get bored if they go on too long, so yeah that is really groovy.

I think this will be a nice album to put on on those days where you just want to chill out at home and listen to something relaxing, but interesting. Something that will keep you interested and grooving, but at the same time is just cool enough to relax with a nice bottle or two of wine . Or maybe at those, you know cheesy like dinner bars. Where they do food and martinis and they always have the lamest laidback house on, well this would be way better, I would actually go to one of those bars if this was on. And I might even drink a martini, but more that likely I would order a rye and ginger, because that would just make more sense. And I would just sit there and feel so cool and really enjoy the whole damn thing. And be like yeah I’m sitting in a bar being so awesome. Okay just good like that.

I think I would have preferred a few more Displacer tracks than remixes though, as the only one that really stands out is the L’Ombre one. I mean they’re not bad or anything, just the groove is changed a little too much.
