I'm avoiding reading Don Quixote, so I've been thinking a lot about the Children in Need special from this weekend.

At first watch, I liked it. Not the best, but still pretty funny. Amy flirting with herself! Rory wearing goggles! The Doctor being awesome! But something just didn't sit right with me, and I've been thinking about it a lot.
First of all, I'm getting kind of tired of Moffat always relying on the whole "timey wimey, wibbly wobbly" idea. I like that he plays around with time, but this felt just like "Curse of the Fatal Death", "Time Crash", "Blink", and pretty much all of season 5.
The second thing that bothered me was the whole "it's all Amy's fault that Rory parked the Tardis in the Tardis, because she was wearing a short skirt", not "Rory should have paid more attention to what he was doing, and instead was distracted by his wife".
I appreciate Amy's sexuality, don't get me wrong. I like that she's not afraid to use it when she needs to, and, even though I didn't like it, her going after the Doctor after Flesh and Stone was in character for her. She wears short skirts, and she isn't afraid to be herself. I love her relationship with Rory and the Doctor.
I have problems with her, but it has more to do with Moffat's writing of her, not her character. I hate that they used her career as a Kissogram as a joke, I feel like they could have done a lot more with it, and instead it was just all a big joke.
But, with this episode, almost everything about the writing of Amy bothered me. Amy can't drive, but she got her license because the instructor was distracted by her short skirt! Amy should wear trousers because Rory/guys can't help himself/themselves when he's/they're around her! It the classic "blame the victim" attitude that people use when it comes to rape. "I couldn't help myself, just look at what she was wearing!" "She wanted it. I could tell because of what she was wearing/because she was dancing provocatively/she was flirting with me." And it's not just men who do this, women do it to other women. They hear someone was raped, and they say "she's a slut, I'm not surprised" or "look at what she does." People should be able to wear what they want, act the way they want, without the fear of rape or shame.
I just expected more from Doctor Who. Some things I've heard Moffat say about when he was casting Amy, and Rose's character, and just women in general, has just made me very disappointed. And it makes me sad that people think that just because these specials were supposed to be a comedy, that this kind of writing is okay. Some comments made over at

this post made me realize that people still think this way of thinking is okay, just because it's a TV show, and just because TV shows in the past were the same way. It is now 2011, it's not okay to think this way anymore!
And now that I've gotten that all out, I must go read Don Quixote.
